  • Edmonton International last round

    Edmonton International last day.

Today is the last day of the Edmonton International. The event this year has been very exciting with some excellent fighting chess. Out of 40 games so far only 8 ended in draws and only 1 out of all GM games was a draw (a very exciting game between Sam Shankland and Alexei Shirov).
Yesterday's Penultimate round was quite crucial as Sam Shankland (6.5/7) deafeated the leader Surya Ganguly (7/7) to take the sole lead.
In the last round Sam will face IM Richard Wang who on paper is a huge underdog, yet the last time they faced each other (2014) Richard won convincingly. Surya will have a much tougher pairing, against Alexei Shirov.

Assuming that any norm chances had already been exhausted, what sort of prize structure or trophies exist?

If one cannot access the live pages, http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chess...3&crosstable=1 has already had a good replay summary.

For Wang - Shankland, http://www.chessgames.com/perl/bookie?prop=26807 and http://www.chessgames.com/perl/bookie?prop=26808 (Ganguly - Shirov):
    table[
Winner pool fract. odds* dec. odds*
    Wang 55 16:1 17.05 Ganguly 451 4:3 2.33
    Shankland 720 1:3 1.35 Shirov 140 13:2 7.38
    Draw 209 7:2 4.53 Draw 489 8:7 2.15 ] table

(or their daily double: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/bookie?prop=26809 ) are their predictions.

Canadians vs the top 4 so far is 0/18. There are still 2 games to go so maybe Sambuev or Wang can break the goose egg.
I was sure Findlay was going to do it yesterday but he just missed.

Congratulations to GM Sam Shankland and GM Surya Ganguly for playing extremely well. The fighting spirit of GM Ganguly is noted after losing to Sam Shankland in round 8 he beat GM Shirov as Black in the last round!

I have to join the congratulations to the winners, but also to all the participants for some incredible fighting chess. It was a great pleasure to have players who were really willing to go for it with no reservations was quite awesome. Also, congratulations to AB champion Bitan Banerjee on scoring his 4th IM norm. Bitan never bothered applying for the FM title as he is just waiting for his rating to surpass the 2400 mark.
