Chris, when I hit "quick reply" after a post, it inserts the OP text as a quote. I thought that was what the Quote button was supposed to do.

I rarely want to quote the original poster. Of course, I can delete the quote, but it seems strange to have quote as a default setting.

What thread display method are you using?

I think you actually might be hitting the "multi-quote" button, which lets you quote more than one post.

Alternatively, you might have it set to auto-quote messages in quick-replies.

Hmmm just noticed the "post reply" button at the bottom left. There's a heck of a lot of stuff on the screen. I'm just a simple person, really.

I hope posters don't start doing text in colours and stupid pix and stuff. I used to go to a running message board, which allowed animated gifs as avatars. The board became unreadable.

That might be... I guess I'll have to investigate. Sigh.

If it becomes a problem we'll regulate it, but I get the impression most people who will post here will be too lazy to do all the colours :)

An avatar is 80x80 pixels maximum, which even if it was a 24 bit bitmap would be 19,200 bytes (just under the 20000 limit). A jpeg would be even smaller.

I suggest using a decent picture editor (Photoshop if you have it, GIMP is a free version) which will allow you to adjust the size of the image and it will do a nice job of scaling it to get it under the limit.
It's the Eagle I have in my personal file. When I uploaded it I had thought it would be the picture which shows up as an Avatar. I don't know how to make it smaller. It's what I used on a similar setup for the picture beside my posts.

                An apparent glitch

I posted an event on the Calendar for August 29-31 (Abe Yanofsky mem.). I can see the event when I am logged on. However, if I just click on this site, without logging in, I see nothing at all. What up with that?

Probably something to do with the permissions for that particular calendar. I'll look into it.

I suggest you to copy/paste it in paint. After you'll can easily save it as a JPEG image.

If it is any help ...

If it is any help, I am able to see the birthday notification for Andrei Botez on the calendar when I am NOT logged in under my account. It is the events, like the AY Memorial, that do not appear.

The Calendar needs a small edit

The calendar needs an edit. June 14 has a duplicate entry by Charles Aronowitz on the "Championship of the NorthEast Kingdom".

I mention this because I'm not sure if Charles is up to editing his handiwork and deleting the duplicate entry. I seem to remember reading some remarks of frustration on his part on the old board.

Re: Work in progress ... suggestion

Chris... not sure if this is already implemented, but on the main page of a forum
                                (eg: for Chesstalk - http://www.chesstalk.info/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=2 )

it would be great (I think) to have an auto-refresh set to, say, 5 minutes?

                                { meta http-equiv="refresh" content="300" }

                                (I've replaced the usual opening and closing < > with { })
