General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Please Kerry when you have been sleeping or not paying attention don't come in on the end and try to take issue with something you don't know about.
To summarize for those that have not been paying attention this book collection has been listed for sale on ebay with a starting bid of $4000 or 4k as referred to in the top post & the other strings re this situation. The original bid was to be 7k.
I hope you realize given the public information ( so far ) your position is absurd on this matter. The BC chess community looks bad right now by association, supporting the man and not his family. What are we missing here ?
Duncan you are absured, there are plenty of people in the BC chess community that have nothing to do with this. To smear eveyone in BC who plays chess or is a CFC member is absurd. If you know something name names, otherwise don't insult people you don't even know.

Now you can go back to sleep.
You replied to my post asking the question "is that the same chess community you wanted to spend $4K on the books?" so I naturally thought "you" referred to me.

Which part of this do I not know about?
apparently how to read as the 'you' refers to the seller or sellers who wrote the ad on ebay (which granted you quoted but obviously I wasn't implying that you yourself wrote) & at the same time are apparently deriding the same 'Canadian chess community' (ie all of us) for this situation
to read my response as I thought you Kerry personally wanted someone to buy the collecton for 4k is silly
It is no wonder that the family has issues with the chess communities position when we get replies like yours on this forum.
Duncan I don't know Peter Stockhausen, I have never met Peter Stockhausen, I am not involved in this situation at all just because I happen to live in Canada (or according to you any chess players who live in BC) and play chess and am also a member of the CFC, when I paid my membership fees I did not know I was signing up to take responsibility for other peoples unfortunate troubles, for example I herein make clear that I take no responsibility for any future actions of one Duncan Smith in case the same claim is made re yourself and the Canadian chess community in future
I have no way of helping in this situation, I have no way of making it right and I had nothing to do with making it wrong, I neither aided or abeted Peter Stockhausen in this apparent abandonment of family, I strongly suspect that 99.99% of the Canadian chess community are in the same position, if not 100%
if you know of anyone that has aided & abeted Peter Stockhausen in this situation then by all means speak up, if not then I don't see how you are helping the family by your bizzare posturing
the post you took exception to suggested a job he could apply for, obviously for him to support his family in the future he will need a job & funds to do so, far from being a bad thing its a sensible suggestion of how he can help himself and his family
there are lots of chess players in Canada and no we don't all end up in this kind of situation because we are part of the Canadian chess community and there is something about this community that leads to marital separation
to pretend that the chess community is somehow responsible for this to settle old Duncan Smith scores is sick, sick, sick
the one or two times I had any postings here that involved any discussion with Peter Stockhausen it was very limited
in my job as an Ontario Works caseworker I deal with this situation all the time, I will probably have a case similar to this waiting on my desk when I get back from vacation to take an application, I deal with family separations every day of the work week - I don't ask what the spouses hobbies were and then blame that 'community' for the separation

- public information given. He is missing, possibly dead? I don't see how being thankful that he is alive is a bad thing... thinking otherwise is ABSURD in my books.
- guilt by association?? sorry, but his PERSONAL life has NOTHING to do with his work with the CFC or Chess in general. All I proposed is that we haven't been given all the details... people and families split apart for many reasons, perhaps he had a nervous breakdown??? WE DON'T HAVE THE DETAILS. I for one am willing to give him the benefit of "innocent until proven guilty." what I stated that is that I was glad he was alive.
- I also didn't say anything about his family. Of course I feel for them... I DIDN'T SAY I PICKED A SIDE. Perhaps you should get some glasses... don't put words into my mouth which I DIDN'T STATE.
I really don't know Peter all that well... we have met and played against each other at a couple of tournaments. I have no 'vested interest' in this matter. but even if it was someone that I HATED, I would respond the same way. Not doing so shows something about YOUR character and others who are quick to stab him in the back without any details.
Listen mate, I hope Peter get's better ( if he's ill ) or atones for his actions ( if he's not ). The overdone rhetoric I can do without.
Then perhaps you or others who publicly are quick to judge should take care with your statements. Call me absurd, and I will respond. Period. Overdone? I don't think so, it was nothing of what I was thinking.
