Congratulations Jean. I crossed paths with Jean mainly in 1983-84, and he has remained one of my chess heroes. He also inspired me to better understand Québec.

Too bad we're such a small zone. Jean should have become a GM years ago...
No matter how big and bad you are, when a two-year-old hands you a toy phone, you answer it.

Yeah... Even by winning the zonal a full points ahead, his performance is only around 2350 (FIDE).

Pretty sure it's more like 2530. Maybe you just got the 3 and 5 mixed up? :)

                  + 2140
                  = 2403
                  = 2052
                  + 2039
                  = 2558
                  + 2409
                  + 2250
                  + 2350
                  + 2291

Average rating of opponents : 2277
                  Total score : 7,5/9
                  Performance : 2352

Calculated by FIDE Chess Rating calculator

But this is because he played against players who had a bad FIDE rating comparatively to their CFC rating. Even with an incredible 9/9 he would have a performance around 2400.

Does the FIDE have a different way to calculate the performances? I had expect a better performance but that is what their calculator says.

Sad. This means that everyone in the tournament has lost FIDE points. I wonder where all those points have gone... The CFC should file a complaint to FIDE asking for their return... :)

On the other hand if I performed at 2530 (FIDE) which makes some sense, that is not so bad considering that all those young and strong players have much too low FIDE ratings. In any case this performance felt extremely good, possibly even better than the championship I won 31 years ago. I played consistent chess from beginning to end and gave few chances. Notwithstanding the actual figures it felt like a GM performance.

There is a chess life after 50... After all I am 25 years younger than Korchnoi!Thank you for all the congratulations! The unofficial deadline for them is tonight at midnight. Afterwards i might consider them a bit opportunistic...:)

Re: Re : Canadian Closed - Hebert wins

                      I get 2277 + 273 (0.83 score) = 2550.

I wonder if their calculator is broken?

Fide's performance formula seems to be even more simplistic than the CFC's one. It looks like it is:

opponents' average plus (wins minus losses multiplied by 12.5)

                        In M. Hebert's case that gives 2277 plus 75 = 2352.

The CFC's performance calculator would give 2544.

I was using the formula in their handbook. Where did they get this 12.5 thing from?

I have no idea but it's pretty obvious that they're on-line calculator uses this 12.5 thing.

I'm shocked that their on-line calculator does things differently than their handbook. Shocked! Shocked, I tell ya....
