    Round Five

    Late Games

Peter Doggers - The day after Magnus Carlsen miraculously escaped from a dead-lost position, it was Caruana's turn to do something very similar. Afterward the American grandmaster revealed that he had been close to resigning more than once in the game.

Typically avoiding heavy theory, McShane played the Four Knights. Caruana followed suit with 4...Bd6!? and an original middlegame ensued with heavy pieces and knights for White vs. bishops for Black.

Caruana sacrificed a pawn, but failed to get compensation. Instead it was McShane who got an overwhelming position, and when he won an exchange the win seemed close.

However, like with Kovalev against Carlsen, McShane was handicapped by being low on time. After the trade of queens he needed to make four more moves to reach move 60. The English GM managed to do it, but then probably gave away the win on move 61.

Peter Doggers - The world champ took some risks today. "I am not sure I would recommend this whole 10.a4 business because when you go a2-a4 and g2-g4 there is no good way to castle, and in the Sicilian king safety is very important," he said.

Carlsen said that his opponent played "a little too positionally in the opening." Carlsen got the better chances after throwing in 18.a5 b5, which improved White's king safety and left Black with little counterplay.

It was a "tough fight," said Carlsen. "I think I was always likely to end up ahead there. But yeah, it was another tough game but compared to yesterday it was a walk in the park," he said.

    - Nice to see Dreev & Gelfand in the top 10 boards as well. They still got it!

    - The #IOMChess Round 6 pairings include the blast from the past Carlsen-Shirov!

    - After almost 7 hours and 85 moves Fabiano Caruana survives against Luke McShane!

    - A missed chance for Caruana, who while playing on McShane's time trouble overlooked 39...Qxg5!! 40.exd7 Re4! https://

    - A great day for world no. 1 @MagnusCarlsen, who scores a smooth win over Ganguly while Luke McShane is on the verge of beating world no. 2 Fabiano Caruana!

    - Once upon a time it was a good idea to take kids into the endgame... but not anymore! 15-year-old Nodirbek Abdusattorov beats a 3rd strong GM (Saric) in #IOMChess to move to 3.5/5

    Round Five

    Early Games

    Bits and Pieces

    Fiona Steil-Antoni gives a quiz/poll each day.

    Yesterday she asked:

Would you try the “Swiss Gambit” (losing or drawing in early rounds to avoid the strongest opposition)?

    The results

    15% Yes
    50% No
    10% Maybe
    24% Isn’t it unethical

    Based on 893 votes

This position with quadrupled pawns from Round 4, Paravyan – Dreev after 20.cxd3

    Dreev won

    The Dress Code again

Olimpiu Urcan - 19-year-old Iranian Parham Maghsoodloo does not need his lucky Adidas sleeveless jacket - a clothing item apparently not allowed by FIDE's dress code - to play well. He's currently one of the leaders in the Isle of Man event with 3½ out of 4.

Tarjei Svensen - NTB reports that Vienna, St. Petersburg and Monte Carlo have expressed interest in hosting the 2020 WC match. FIDE's decision will be announced November 1st.

Isle of Man Grand Swiss 2019

    October 13, 2019

    Round Four Games

Carlsen had entered the tournament with a streak of 90 undefeated games, and added three more in the Isle of Man. It was 438 days ago that the Norwegian had lost a game for the last time.

The 25-year-old Belarusian grandmaster Kovalev got incredibly close to changing that.

In what was a Moscow variation of the Sicilian (where White checks with the bishop on move three), Carlsen chose a somewhat odd setup with his king's bishop on d8. It was playable, but after a few inaccuracies he allowed his opponent a serious advantage.

White had a stellar knight on e4, a protected passed pawn on d6 and a centralized queen on d5—what more can you wish for? Few had expected the game to take this turn, especially taking into account that Kovalev, the winner of the 2019 Tata Steel Challengers, had played a game of 152 moves the day before!

At some point the engines were giving the Belarusian player an advantage of the equivalent of a full queen, but in practice it wasn't that easy. For starters, Kovalev was in time trouble — he had to make 14 moves in less than two minutes plus a 30-second increment. Secondly, he had to avoid a three-fold move repetition in the process. And thirdly, Carlsen was defending extremely well.

In the end it proved too difficult to convert for Kovalev. What was almost a big sensation became a (very) narrow escape for the world champion.

Chris Rice in the EC Forum - A Sutovsky post on FB serves as a nice summary for Round 4: "Magnus was not on the verge of losing. He was lost. Deadly and hopelessly. But no, there was a glimmer of a hope - white could win in so many different ways, that Kovalev must have felt himself as a kid in toys-r-us. A choice was so wide. And he still had time to enjoy his position and kept choosing between a variety of winning moves. Once Yusupov taught us, the young students of Polugaevsky chess school: when you are clearly winning - pick one move, focus on it and calculate till the end. Do not compare. But to Magnus' luck, Kovalev did not attend that lesson... Carlsen escapes, though he is yet to find his play. Meanwhile Caruana, Wang Hao and McShane share the lead with 3.5/4."
