General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
The thread "Can Biden Win?" is now officially superseded, since he has indeed won. Now the question is, can he govern?
I'd be interested to hear how many think there will be a civil war in the USA within the next 4 year, especially in light of Democrat control of the Senate after January 20th.
It looks like Democrats have won both senate seats in Georgia. So good bye to Moscow Mitch. Trump s/b gone in a couple of weeks. Biden needs to ignore the billionaires, do what is popular, slash defence spending, tax the super rich, raise minimum wage, neuter the oil industry. That would be a start. I am not saying it will happen, just what I hope will be the first step.
Hi Bob G: Though Biden will obviously be better than Trump, Trump has set the bar very low.
One must recognize that Joe is the poster boy for the Establishment, the body in the Dem's that gutted, or tried to gut, their very moderate left wing.
I expect nothing very radical except putting the old "good" things back into place.
The oil industry will definitely not be shut down. The left wing's Green Plan will be so watered down as to be of little help re negative climate change (With an almost agreed on "Tipping Point" being reached in only 10 years now: Jan. 1, 2031.)
Defence Spending will go UP.
The elite 1% will still control the Dem Establishment.
There are four tax options in the capitalist system:
1. greatly steepen the progressive income tax (Individual & Corporate), and close loopholes only beneficial to the 1%.
2. Eliminate Sales Tax (Disproportionately borne by the 99%);
3. An Inheritance Tax;
4. A Wealth Tax.

Why do some people like to target someone else's money, instead of finding ways to make their own, or finding ways to eliminate the corrupt systems which unfairly prevent them from making their own?

Hi Dilip: My Principle: Those who benefit most from the system (The wealthy) should carry a significant part of the costs of the system (By taxation of them, that recovers a significant part of the cost). The Commoner benefits somewhat as well, and so they also should bear some of the cost through paying general tax revenue.

If a few people 'benefit more from the system' than others can, either there is something wrong with the system, which needs to be rectified quickly, or the system itself is neutral towards all, but some are just rewarded as per what they do... in the latter case, the one who is rewarded does not owe anything to anyone else, though he or she may choose to make huge charitable donations...

Interesting that words like 'legally' (e.g. the one who is legally rewarded) don't appear in your post. Was that intentional?
p.s. "the one who is rewarded does not owe anything to anyone else" - baloney!! At absolute minimum they owe for their share of the common assets and other resources - same as any other citizen.

"We hang the petty thieves and appoint the great ones to public office." - Aesop
"Only the dead have seen the end of war." - Plato
"If once a man indulges himself in murder, very soon he comes to think little of robbing; and from robbing he comes next to drinking and Sabbath-breaking, and from that to incivility and procrastination." - Thomas De Quincey

I agree, Peter. Its just that if everyone equally owes to a common system (and indirect taxation in general), it is different from one group owing to the other, as Bob Armstrong suggested...
'Legally' is a term which can be misused...Everything 'legal' in a communist country is not necessarily desirable... much of it is outright unethical...
This thread has taken an interesting philosophical direction to do with taxation... but I see no one has commented on the U.S. civil war question I asked.
And yet today, there are ARMED PRO-TRUMP ACTIVISTS INSIDE THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES, and a person has been shot, and police have drawn their weapons.
This is just the beginning. Donald Trump Jr. and his brother Eric are inciting the mobs to a frenzy. The fact that the mob actually made it into the chambers of Congress will embolden them in the future, and it is this future we need to pay mind to now. Especially with the Senate now in control of the Democrats.
I am predicting comprehensive civil war in the United States before the next U.S. Presidential election in 2024.
Oh, and by the way, there's a mutation of the Covid virus in South Africa that is proving resistant to antibody drugs and is in a stage of commiuity spread.. Get ready for a 2021 that is worse than 2020.
A lot pf the future south of the border depends on what the U.S. Justice system does with Donald Trump. He may try to pardon himself before leaving office in two weeks, but that would only cover federal crimes. The New York State justice people are working on several cases involving him and his companies, pardons won't matter there.
Lots of video coming out showing DC law enforcement actually ALLOWING AND ENCOURAGING the mob to enter the Capitol building. Also, Trump in his morning rally exorted the mob to walk the mile up Pennsylvania Ave. to the Congress and "take back our country".
This goes very high up in the food chain.... months of investigations are coming into just this day's events.
Meanwhile, the division continues.... members of Congress and Senators still objecting to the electoral college ballot counting.... still believing Trump's lies....
This is not going away. The mob backed down for today, but that doesn't mean much.
