General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
I've been a regular reader for months, waiting for his promised blockbuster article, in 5 parts, on the scandalous history of the CFC. Has Kevin abandoned his blockbuster in favour of a weekly serial?;)
Oh I see I'm included in those who have stolen money from the CFC. Maybe he can pass along the bank account number (overseas I presume) as well, I could really use that money right about now :)
I think it's time the CFC fessed up: Maybe the reason their site's down is that they finally published Kevin's expose on Canadian chess on August 28 and Google quickly detected the virus and promptly blacklisted them.
This is a job for Inspector Dixon of Kingston Yard!

I just took a look at his blog, after a long absence...gee...give me $5 for every falsehood that appears there and I will be able to retire tomorrow LOL
KEVIN IS A GREAT CANADIAN CHESSPLAYER!
What he has accomplished is awesome, especially since he came from a country where chess does not receive a great deal of respect and support... hence the necessary structure to develop talented players does not exist.
He has talent AND he worked extremely hard. He deserves our respect as a chessplayer.
I went to High School with Kevin.
Jim, his brother, was a good friend for many years and we reconnected lately thanks to the website he put together on the Spraggett family....Jim has confirmed that he will be coming to our 25th anniversary party...WOW!
Now that made my day :)
His other brothers, Mark and Grant were also people I spent time with over the years. They are all good people....and they all play chess :)
The latest screed at Kevin's Blog of Horrors points to a video apparently of Peter Stockhausen's wife ... pleading for help and wondering why Peter has left her and their daughter in apparently financial ruin...
That's all I could figure out in between the sobbing and etc.
"we will have to get rid of the cats!" I think I heard...
oh, the humanity of it all!
OMG, I know it is late and I am tired, but WTF?
Is this for real? Does anyone know? Kevin claims P.S. left his first wife under bizarre circumstances too (wouldn't speak to her; she had to deal with him through a lawyer etc). And I thought Desperate Housewives was brutal crap... appears that has been topped.
It seems that I have now become part of the Chess community conspiracy in Canada that is protecting Peter Stockhausen, cheering him on in his apparent quest to impoverish his wife and daughter, yada yada yada.
Well, to set the record straight:
1. I have never met Peter S.
2. I think I spoke with him on the phone once many years ago when he was on the CFC Executive - perhaps when he was President? This was about his upcoming initiative to personally contact former CFC members and try to coax them back... never happened
3. I dont know (or care) where he is
4. I dont know Lynn Stringer
5. I do NOT endorse what Peter S. is alleged to have done
Peter's wife (whom I presume is the author of the text at the link above) is apparently not able to post here on Chesstalk; that is a shame. There is a severe lack of credible information about Peter S.'s disappearance and the innuendo bandied about on Spraggett's blog is hard to take.
Anyway, everyone judge for yourself what is or isn't going on... I am going back to my position of "dont care". I apologize for my previous rant - it was judgemental and somewhat flippant - much like me I'm afraid.
It's kinda funny how the "Canadian Chess Community" is often seen as extremely disfunctional, but now it's capable of a big conspiracy to hide someone many of us have never met!

It reminds me of the old joke.
Q. Why do married men die before their wives?
A. Because they want to.
Like I told a friend. Never leave home without your chess books.
Lynn Stringer is well know in BC for her tireless efforts in tournament chess. She helped during the Langley open where I was introduced to her. She can't believe what has been said about her and has been basically told to ignore the whole thing... She also stated that she is horrified about the 'pictures' that have been posted. Remember all that was posted is that she knew that Peter was alive... how this gets twisted into being a homewrecker is speculation at its worst.
Kevin does seem to have an ax to grind with the CFC... I can imagine what his 'report' is going to say... that being said, he has been promising this 'report' for quite awhile now and it almost seems like it is vaporware. I generally am amused with his blog but he certainly seems to hate most people associated with Canadian chess.

"Kevin does seem to have an ax to grind with the CFC..." - you think? lol
Yeah, his shorts are in a bit of a twist. I couldn't believe the garbage about Stockhausen either and thought it was over the top. Then there was the video to boot (not on Kevin's blog but certainly prominently promoted from there). This is all too bizarre...
PS: I knew that information about Lynn but other than that all I knew was that the statement about 'knowing he was alive' was attributed to her. How it has progressed into the involvement of the Chess Community of Canada is beyond me.
