General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Many moons ago (circa 2003 I would guess) some nutcase was posting on ChessTalk under the name of Kevin Spraggett. These posts were so bizarre that nobody in their right mind would post them using their own name (or any other name for that matter), thus it was only reasonable to conclude that somebody other than the real Kevin was authoring the garbage in an effort to make Kevin appear to be of unbalanced psyche.
When it became apparent that several misguided readers assumed this material was indeed being posted by Kevin Spraggett, I saw fit to start the Kevin Spraggett Fan Club in an effort to defend Kevin from the resulting character assassination. Come to think of it, I also headed up a Royal Game Commission on the matter.
I have not visited the blogsite in question and am only an infrequent visitor to ChessTalk these days, and therefore don’t know if this might be the same unstable minded twit who was attempting to publicly dishonor chess in general and Kevin in particular several years ago. The comments posted above in this thread, do, however, suggest a connection between the two (darn those day passes).

I don't think this is the work of Kevin's evil twin. The chess portion of his blog is vintage K.S. the rest of it is early signs of Fischer's Syndrome.
Fact is I am quite sure many people consider the stance taken publically by the local chess community to be highly unethical and severely lacking in empathy for the family.
This is not a criticism of Lynn Stringer. Lynn should just publically post she is not involved in Peter's disappearance at all. If she can't well it's more complicated then you would have us believe.
As for people feeling sorry for Lynn well that is extremely misguided save your concern for Peter's family that has far bigger issues to deal with then Lynn does. Consider that a good example of why Peter's family might carry a fair degree of disgust for some of you and rightly so.

Who exactly do you think qualify for her degree of disgust?? I don't see any conspiracy to hide either information about Peter or even Peter himself! Personally I think his family is lashing out at a convenient target. What information do YOU have?

Duncan, to what "stance taken publically by the local chess community" are you referring? You're not sucking up all that KS BS, are you? Do you really think that, ahem, **THE BRITISH COLUMBIA CHESS COMMUNITY**, or anyone in it, is conspiring to hide PS's whereabouts? This is a matter for the Stockhausen family to resolve amongst themselves. I think the rest of us should stay out of it.

I see no valid reason for you to post (and repost) the link with that crud – rather poor taste IMHO.
Many of us will recall the intense animosity that the Kevin Spraggett nutcase imposter feigned for Peter S. during absurd online outbursts about six years ago.
That said, your suggestion that Kevin suffers from ‘Fischer’s Syndrome’ definitely crosses the line. Kevin is a man of great intellect and decency, not to mention psychological veracity. The mere suggestion that he struggles with dementia is appalling.
As President of the Kevin Spraggett Fan Club, I have little choice but to exercise my authority and bar you from Club membership until such time as you get your act together. I realize this may seem like an extreme measure on my part, but the Club’s membership must be protected from infiltration by infidels who make outlandish accusations against our hero.

Spraggett says on today's blog (among other things):
"Ofcourse, the oneline chess community in Canada attracts some individuals with emotional and psychological problems, and there were a few emails to both me and to Karen that could barely hide their pleasure in seeing others suffer. I ignore and delete such emails, but we should hardly blame Karen for becoming even angrier by such provocations from the degenerate likes of Kerry Liles, John Coleman, Peter Mckillop, and others over on chesstalk.
This week I expect more revelations from Karen Richards, as she struggles to maintain her family together while she seeks information that will lead to Peter Stockhausen's apprehension."
Re: keeping me out of the K.S. Fan Club was correct
And there's only three of us. The Three Degenerates!! Doesn't this remind you of when Czar Nicholas named the six original grandmasters? We're the three ORIGINAL degenerates. John, Kerry and I recognize your expertise in this field so you can be Degenerate #1. Kerry and I will be Degenerates #1a and #1b. Charles Graves must be green with envy. Charles' title of #1 Fan in the KSFC can't compare to our titles of Degenerate #1, #1a and #1b.
