General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Your last statement is not very intelligent because much time has elapsed since the blog first came out. KS would have objected by now, had the material been written by someone else on his site. ( not an easy thing to do with password authentication anyway ).
Anthony, I was not saying what you think I was saying. I wasn't referring to intelligence, but rather, to making moral judgements and to having opinions on current events, politics, etc. Neither a GM title nor a high I.Q. translates to being superior at any of these things, that's my opinion. It is fine for you to agree with Kevin's opinions, you are of course free to do that, but please don't give his GM title as a justification for you and others to agree with him. Surely there must be other reasons why you agree with him?
I guess I was fooled into thinking Charles Graves' post about KS not having internet access was for real, because Graves posed himself as a huge KS fan. But for whatever reason, I guess he was making some sort of nonsense of the whole situation.
Only the rushing is heard...
Onward flies the bird.
Neither a GM title nor a high I.Q. translates to being superior at any of these things, that's my opinion.
We are talking about chess politics here on this thread at this site, not world politics. And we are talking about a GM who is repected by FIDE. We are also talking about a very knowledgeable person when it comes down to both chess, and the politics of chess.
You are right , it is not like any GM would be more knowledgeable than an IM or a 1800 rated player . A GM title does not make a person a genious at everything.
Sincerely though, after John Prentice departed , the leadership of the CFC has fallen to individuals that have had their egos and self-interests up front, and have placed chess in a secondary position. Many of them were not even good chess players but used the game so that they could fly from city to city on their own business trips. It is refreshing when a GM like KS steps up to bat and starts swinging. Those that thought that they could get away silently without anyone knowing are now becoming exposed.
You are entitled to your own opinion. Comment: dont be swayed by those that try to protect themselves from the things they did.

Kevin's opinions on the CFC and chess in Canada (or the world) is NOT what sparked the 'debate' or reaction here. We are talking about his INCORRECT analysis of the Stockhausen family situation where he BLUNDERED and made totally false claims and ridiculous accusations.
All of this CLEARLY came about because he has an old score to settle with Stockhausen! Can you not see that? Ken Craft's characterization of you as a sycophant was a result of your apparent unwillingness to see past that rubbish.
Another annoyance is the constant bleating about how his expose of Canadian Chess is going to be posted 'real soon now' - either post it or shut up about it! That reminds me of his 50-ish page(?) manifesto that he finally produced a number of years ago - after the same sort of incessant and transparent exhortations about how it would finally reveal the secrets of the universe.
..... after John Prentice departed , the leadership of the CFC has fallen to individuals......Many of them were not even good chess players......
Not even good chess players! OMG, how can this subhuman species even feed itself? But seriously Anthony, I do get tired of the unwarranted importance that some players place on chess ratings. Trust me, most of us non-elite chess players do function quite well in society.
Perhaps you would like a handbook section requiring minimum ratings for the CFC leadership, maybe 2300+? If that were the case, the CFC would have disappeared a long time ago!
Your post goes on to imply unethical and/or criminal behaviour from various CFC leaders since John Prentice. I have been hearing this sort of innuendo since I got involved 2 years ago. Where is the evidence? KS has been at bat for months, but he can't seem to hit anything! I'm still waiting for his blockbuster report he promised months ago.
I had a quick look at K.S,'s blog to-day.I must admit I often enjoy his joke of the day.Even more amusing however were his assertions that he received more than 50 "ugly,destructive and unprovoked personal attacks" on Chesstalk.This from an individual who sees nothing wrong with debasing an eighty-one year old lady on his site.At least here, he has the option to respond, unlike those targeted on his blog.Kevin,there is truth to the statement we reap what we sow.The kicker however was that he blamed Larry for his "lack of moderation".I almost fell off my chair laughing.I'm surprised I haven't been added to his list of infamy like some of my fellow posters.I guess I know where too many of the bodies are buried as they say.
Dear Heather,
Yes, I also could not believe that he had the nerve to write about "unprovoked personal attacks" when he is the king of them. I was also amused when Lynn wrote she had not seen PS for 10 years and Kevin produced evidence that they must have seen each other 6 years ago. Great detective work Kevin. 6 years as opposed to 10 years. Big deal.
Blaming Larry is not a surprise of course as it is easier to blame Larry and not his own mental problems, whatever they may be.
On his next Canadian chess update, I think he should write about how he left our Olympic team in the middle of the tournament a few olympics ago. That would be a good story.

There may be many many counter-examples, but a good one is Dr. Malcolm Collins. He was about 200 points stronger than Prentice at his peak, and his two-year term was free of ego involvement. If any CFC President was "all business" (the health of chess), it was Malcolm Collins.
It's all too tempting to some commentators, rankled by an official's decision, to attack that official's character. To take cheap shots. While the CFC's batting average over the past quarter-century has been slumping, I think that by and large they have been "men of good character", not Black Sox. If you listen to Lawrence Day, whose opinions are always to be respected, even when disagreed with, the CFC's batting average was pretty low even back to the days of Prentice. The fact remains that the position of chess in Canada is minor league relative to our socio-economic peers, the countries of Europe. OK, this is the New World, but we have been working at this pretty hard for at least 65 years now. To continue the baseball analogy, our pitching has been shored up and there is some hope of returning to our performance of the glory years rather than being relegated (oops, sorry, mixed in a soccer analogy), but even in our glory years we missed the playoffs. The one thing we didn't have in the glory years is the whole CYCC special team (for all you CFL fans), and I hope that we are able to build on its success (ah, before we mess up that too!). Another factor is that we may be entering a kind of "post internet" age when people realize that despite all of the internet's advantages, it just isn't the same thing as being live.
I've wondered a few times whether somebody who so enthusiastically promotes a blog, and even occasionally announces what might be coming up on the blog, whether that person might also be a co-author or editor of that blog. It's not rocket science, it's just a question of the, ah, editor, also knowing the password.
I don't read the blog anymore, because of the slander of LS.

He's rapidly descending into self-parody. Which is a shame, because the chess content of the blog is quite good.

The blog slander is obviously obnoxious, which is probably the best that can be said of the KS personality when it comes to comments on Canadian chess. I grew up admiring him because he was a "born and bred in Canada" GM. I am, errr, less admiring these days.
On a more serious note, you write extremely well (natch) but I have always found your various anecdotes about Canadian chess and its personalities to be quite fascinating. Have you considered occasionally contributing along those lines to Tony Ficzere's newsletter? I think contributions from the likes of you, Lawrence Day, and a few other weather-beaten chess opinionates would make for good reading.
