I loved listening to Anand's analysis. It is amazing how his mind works, he is so fast, doing his calculations in his mind "trying to make it work." Especially amusing was his suggestion that an immediately mating line was "boring" because a very similar mate could be accomplished with the inclusion of a Q-sac. I myself once had a game with White where the "boring" Rd1 would have mated. Luckily I found 0-0-0 instead.

Sam Shankland big win against Peter Svidler. Sam had the best placed pieces and it led to a sparkling win.

Yes that bishop did it - total liability. Now if I had that position I would have probably taken the bishop right away and schmucked it up - Vidit has the elegance of a 2700 player and the bishop got surgically removed at the right time.

If Shankland finds 25.Bh4! it seems he's winning against Svidler!

                      And he's played it!

Sam Shankland is the first player through to the #FIDEWorldCup quarterfinals and qualifies for the 2022 FIDE Grand Prix — after a single blunder there was no way back for 2011 Champion Peter Svidler!

                              Position after Black’s 38…Bd7

Magnus probably didn't expect to have another insanely complicated position with no time so soon after the tiebreaks yesterday!

35...Rd8!! would have been beautiful from Magnus, but he didn't play it:

Bacrot was so close to getting to move 40 with an equal position and lots of time to think, but instead he slipped and Magnus is completely winning again!

And Magnus beats Etienne Bacrot in Game 1! Another display of how deadly Carlsen is with a pair of bishops at any stage of the game.

Magnus Carlsen takes the lead in the quarterfinal as Etienne Bacrot resigns after an amazing game! Etienne now has to try and win with Black tomorrow

Sam Shankland also looks to be winning! "I don't expect Sergey to hold this, it's way too bad!" (Giri)

"Sam is one of those guys who looks beautiful with or without his beard... He says they say, I look like Tom Cruise's ugly brother!"

Sam Shankland knows he's winning a pawn ending against Sergey Karjakin!

"Sam is so excited! Sam has everything figured out. Sam will say he's really happy with the way he calculated everything... Sam's like in that movie, he knows the ship has come to save him. I'm here, I've been here for too long!"

Sam Shankland wins the first game against Sergey Karjakin, who now needs to hit back tomorrow to force tiebreaks!

Sam Shankland did a brilliant job of outplaying Karjakhin in the endgame! a5 and then b6! Wow - love it.
