General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
According to FIDE calendar, World Chess Olympiad will be in Moscow from Jul 26 to Aug 08, 2022.
Recently, CFC directors discussed some adjustments to CFC qualification rules. Major points:
1. 20-games requirement. According to CFC rules, a player has to play at least 20 games in the 12-month period before the deadline. Obviously, COVID restrictions makes it really difficult for many players to play 20 games in 12 months.
It was decided to extend 12 months period (Apr 2021 - Apr 2022) to 36 months period (Apr 2019 - Apr 2022). Practically, it means that every player who filled this requirement to Olympiad-2020 (which was cancelled) is good for Olympiad-2022 as well.
Faster time control games played in Canadian World Cup Qualifier-2021 and on-line Olympiad-2020 and 2021 will be counted.
2. Canadian Closed and Canadian Women Closed.
Hopefully, we will have them in Apr 2022. The winner of this event gets spot for Olympiad Team. 2-nd place gets 20 points bonus, 3-rd place gets 10 points. 10 points penalty for player who didn't play/withdrew from the Closed.
3. If everything goes smooth, the final roster will be announced after the finish of Canadian Closed-2022 with new FIDE and CFC ratings.
Few questions:
1) Five-player teams; will you serve as Captain once more?
2) Board order strictly by rating, or other options possible?
3) Past performance in Olympiads a factor in selection?
4) GM Kovalyov?

1. According to CFC rules, directors would decide about Captain. Personally, I would like to see the roster first and talk to players before my decision about captaincy.
2. Last 4 Olympiads, board order never was strictly by rating. Captain decides about it; this is a very important decision by him.
3. Unfortunately, in 2016 voting members didn't support my idea (McKim/Plotkin motion) to take past Olympic performance into account. No, this is not a factor now.
4. I talked to Anton before 2018 Olympiad and he was very solid in his decision not to play in any official FIDE event. Now he is inactive according to current FIDE rating list. Unfortunately, it's too optimistic to expect him playing for us in 2022.
honestly didnt even know spraggett still played. interesting
Spaggett didn't play for Team Canada for more than 15 years. Very likely, he will not be playing in 2022 again. However, for formal reasons his name must be included in the list. He is still pretty active, he plays regularly in Portugal/Spain; his rating is real, he is still a strong player.

ah okay makes sense, thanks for the info. no doubt one of canada's overall greats
Victor (et al), the 2022 Canadian Closed will be part of KEC (Kingston Easter Chess) 2022 (and 2023 and 2024). We could also include a Canadian Women Closed.

Good luck Aris. I really enjoyed the Canadian Closed you ran in Kingston in 2019. Hopefully I can play in 2022, but I am getting a bit old to complete.

We will definitely be trying to get you over here again!
By the way, all the best for the Banff Open! (already had a gig that weekend)
Thanks, Victor.
I share your view on revising the Olympiad team qualification system. It has essentially been the same since the 1970s. When I was a governor, in the early and mid-2000s, I spoke about this, but it went nowhere.
There is no point or time to change anything now for 2022. I think for 2024, there needs to be a major discussion.
Now, one more question: the 20-game requirement is fair to everyone. Speaking hypothetically now, what would happen if someone who doesn't have 20 games were to win the April 2022 championship in Kingston, thereby gaining a spot on the team (as you outlined)? Is the 20-game requirement dropped in that scenario?

Sure, I know about it and will be playing as well. I say "hopefully" because nowadays you can not be sure for any tournaments or other event 5 months from now.
Thanks, Victor.

To your question. Indeed, it's not 100% clear in our regulations. My approach is that Canadian champion gets spot anyway, even he played just 9 games for his entire life.
