    Thanks Erik, that's a great idea!!

    So I'll be at the Golden Horseshoe this weekend, especially for those who prefer paying in person.
    I'll be wearing a mask, but I believe I'll be the only bald Arbiter there. And I'm pandemic-heavy lol
    Seriously though, especially if paying in cash, please include note with name, CFC#, email, cell#

    I'll try to get another pre-registered list posted before I start driving on Friday.
    The one above is already outdated, at least another 10 people since then.
    Most significantly, popular GM Bator Sambuev from Montreal signed on!

    Thanks again Erik, hope to see at least some of you this weekend!

      Hello again, please note that today is the last day for the $30 early-bird discount.
      If you've already emailed me, no worries, you're still good for the reduced price.
      Otherwise, please at least initiate registration by emailing me before midnight.

      Thanks, Aris.

        1) Four prizes of $100 each:
        2) One for Zonal section;
        3) One for Women's Tournament;
        4) One for all other amateur sections;
        5) One for best-played drawn game, from any section.

        And I support Aris' proposal for FM Hans Jung to either chair a committee to decide this, or do take it on himself.

        TIME-SENSITIVE to Frank:
        I've also emailed you, but I'm not confident that my emails are getting to you?!

        If we can't connect soon, then we can't include your gracious proposal in time.

        Super-popular FM Hans Jung is ready to be our judge (and he's also playing!)

          Friendly reminder: I'm at the Golden Horseshoe in Mississauga this weekend,
          in case anyone near here prefers to pay in cash (I actually prefer e-transfer!)

          Tip-of-the-hat to Erik who gave me an old-school Thank You greeting card!
          I felt that was really classy, a little gesture that really put a smile in my face!

          Round 4 at 10am ...

            Hi Aris,

            Thank you for posting the pre-registered list! I'm surprised to see it's in CFC ratings. What will be used for the tournament pairings? I thought FIDE ratings were used for the 2019 Zonal.

            This reminded me of a question I had about that tournament's CFC rating report that I hope someone can answer. Looking at the final standings (https://www.chess.ca/en/ratings/t/?i...04094&p=127431) I had a slightly higher performance rating than Mark Plotkin (2574 vs. 2561) but I gained fewer rating points (16 vs. 22). This is surprising to me since I also had a lower CFC rating (2485 vs. 2490). Given these conditions, I would have expected that I gain at least as many rating points as Mark. Can someone explain why this didn't happen? Thanks!

              Hi Shiyam,

              My understanding of how the CFC rating system works, there's a "bonus rating" component, when a player has a particularly strong performance. Part of this "bonus rating" -- which should be viewed as a supplementary boost to bring a player closer to the rating he/she should be at -- takes into account your highest-ever rating achieved to date. In summary, if your performance is much higher than your current / highest ever rating, making you reach a new personal highest, the bonus kicks in. I don't know the mathematical formulae specifics for the bonus, especially because there is more than one type of bonus based on performances at CFC, if I remember correctly.

              In your case, 2019 Zonal saw Mark reach his highest-ever rating then - (some figure between 2490 and 2512), from 2490 (his rating entering this Zonal) - giving him some type of bonus. In other words... Mark's new published rating would have been lower than 2512, if he had had a highest-ever rating from before that would be higher than that.
              Your highest-ever rating at this tournament was 2514, (from 2013), and your performance rating brought you up to 2501. Because 2501 isn't your highest-ever rating, you missed out on some bonus points.

              That's my understanding based on somewhat out-dated understanding of how the CFC rating works. Outdated in the sense that... these formulae which include the bonus were introduced about a decade ago, and I haven't re-visited this topic in some time. Hope that helps,

              Alex Ferreira

                  In Zonal sections, FIDE rating will be used for pairings.

                    Hi Shiyam, re-surfacing after a long night of driving ...

                    Those aren't CFC ratings per se. I first called the column "qualify rating" but since then I'm using "seeding". Basically, that's the rating that gets that player into that section. In most cases, it's their CFC rating, but it could also be their FIDE rating, or FQE rating for Quebec residents. As the event announcement indicates, and as Victor posted, Zonal pairings will be done using FIDE ratings.

                    Best, Aris.

                              2) the (JR) suffix only applies to the two Zonal sections (special donated prizes)
                              3) please tell me if you see anything off, thanks! arismarghetis at rogers dot com
