Chaotic endgames in the playoffs between Pragga and Caruana. Pragga finally broke thru and won in the third game.

The big stories of the 2023 world cup have been Abasov, Pragga, and Salimova. All of them have performed phenomenally.

Pragg is the youngest candidate (18) behind Fischer (16) and of course Magnus (15), what an amazing player he is already. He has eliminated Caruana and Nakamura, an impressive feat.

Yes, agreed, and I find he has a special calm patience, especially impressive for someone younger?!

Pragga - Carlsen - first game draw. Pragga must now defend as Black. Should be interesting.

No it wasnt interesting. Pragga held the draw but Magnus didnt really do anything.

The excitement will have to come in the playoffs.

In Game one of Abasov - Caruana, Abasov won a stunner! The pundits said that Caruana blundered but it was a brilliant finish. After the last move of the game f5 if Black takes exf5 then Nf6+ wins the queen. (if 27....gxf6 28.Qxh6+ queen sacrifice and checkmate follows.)

Today, I found Caruana's endgame just beautiful!

Yes Caruana responded to the loss with a nice endgame win. The match is all tied up.

Yes even with the exchange up, the win was far from easy. I would not win such an endgame against somebody of my rating. Magnificent play by Fabiano. Pragg is really impressive, difficult to beat him.

Magnus has won the World Cup.

Caruana won the playoff for third.

Pragga and Abasov gained 20 and 31 rating points respectively and both showed they can be competitive with the best in the world.

GM Carlsen's win shows he is far from finished as a chess force, going forward!!! He may have resigned the world championship, but evidently still wants to compete at a high level, likely with fewer events. He is 32, and probably the best-off financially of any world chess champion in history.
