Rd 4 I love the way Maurizzi used his rooks against Korobov (Ra7 and Rg7) but unfortunately he missed tactics and lost. We fans are paying attention.

Good defence needed in Giri Gukesh but not easy. Giri kept up the pressure and got a nice win. Reward - clear first. Giri leads the premiere.

Rd 4 in the challengers Eh, eh Erwin - dont underestimate Erwin in the endgame. Passed rook pawns are good against bishops as well as knights. L'Ami scores again!

Hans is quiet but his chess is not. On top of everything else Hans has learned to shift the position like the great Soviets. Nice win by Niemann.

Pragga with his big win against Ding has passed Anand in rating for the first time. Next is top ten in the world. Congratulations.

Rd 5 Gukesh shows what the knights can do over the bishops!

Of the two leaders Giri held as solid draw in rd 5 against Pragga and Firoujza is (wait for the drum roll) - losing! Will Ju see it through to a win or can Firoujza pull off a draw. Stay tuned.

Of the 5 draws in rd 5 Maghsoodloo Ding had the most spice. Personally I would have taken the queen and an interesting middlegame with three minors for the queen would have resulted. Also 3 other games had interesting endgames shaping Abdusattorov must have missed a win against Wei and Vidit Warmerdam and Donchenko Van Foreest should have played on.

In the challengers my favorite game of the round was Roebers beating Hans Niemann. It all got started with three magnificent retreats! It was also her first win of the tournament and broke her perfect score. Congratulations.
