That Canadian Zonal was unique. Best entertainment in a long time. But don't count out the candidates just yet. We have a lot of chess geniuses there - and when they get really creative - look out!

My bets for most excitement in round 2: Nakamura - Vidit and Caruana - Abasov; Tan - Vaishali and Salimova - Lei

Magnus' picks for the candidates: Caruana and Nakamura. What are your choices?

In terms of sheer will to win, and his drive to make it to the Candidates, I'll go with Firouzja.

Rd 2 Gukesh has the rare diamond pawn formation in his game.

Vidit used the pin on e3 repeatedly to set up an attack on the king but it was a fork at the end that brought Nakamura's resistance to a halt. Big blow to Nakamura. Will he recover?

Pragga and Gukesh were the first of the musketeers to meet. Gukesh held off Pragga's attack and then struck the deciding blow.

It was Caruana's pawn play that started it off but he crashed through on the F-file to end.

Did Firoujza overlook something in his attack? Probably. As it is Nepo is a rook up and I don't see any compensation.

Tan Vaishali 33.Nf6 killer combo! Very nice.

Goryachkina Muzychuk. Black wasted all kinds of time with her bishops and landed in a bad position where sharp tactics decided. Goryachkina won.

Tan wasted no time taking a 2-0 lead in the women's.
