Hopefully Faustino Oro can use the rest day to regroup. He has actually plenty of opportunity to still get his GM norm as Tata steel is a 13 round tournament. So he can get a norm after 9 rounds or 10 or 11 or 12 or even thirteen rounds. Bring your A-game and start winning again Faustino!

The GM norm candidates Faustino Oro and Carissa Yip are stumbling but still have a chance to turn it around.

The Challengers after 8. Maurizzi and Woodward with 6.5. Suleymanli with 6. Ivanchuk with 5.5. We have a four horse race!

In the Challengers we have a barnburner going on. Yuffa against Panesar. Currently at 125 moves. Yuffa has one passed pawn and bishops of the same colour. Can he find the technique with one minute on the clock?

After eight in the Masters Abdusattarov continues to lead with 5.5, Sindarov a half point back.

Erdogmus couldn't find the right technique to win the endgame against Pragga. Maybe the good endgame doctor Karsten Mueller will weigh in on this one.

Bluebaum's enterprisng play faltered to Nguyen's counterplay. His critical miss of 30.Nf4! which would have dashed his opponents hopes ended up with him having to force a draw. Tactics, young man, critical tactics! Must be seen.

Aravindh's play started out looking brilliant but because of flawed execution ended up drawn.

In the Masters Hans Niemann's extra two pawns gave him no advantage as his king position was too weak. Draw.

Erwin L'Ami's desperation tactics netted him nothing but a big rook down against Assaubayeva, so he resigned.

Suleymanli demonstrated superior strategy and tactics against Carissa Yip.

Unfortunately Oro was reduced to total passivity. The final position shows both knights on the edge of the board doing nothing. Fantastic game by Andy Woodward!
