General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
"...ClearSky's summary suggests that this policy may in fact work as intended at creating new jobs. The report says solar PV creates 12 times more jobs than nuclear per kilowatt-hour of electricity generated and 15 times more than coal...."
Isn't this the definition of relatively inefficient? For example, farming without modern-day methods would create at least hundreds of thousands of jobs nation-wide, for the same amount of food.
The purpose of business is not to create jobs, imo. It is to create goods and services. If everyone could be fed without anyone working, that wouldn't be bad; it would be good. Likewise with energy transmission.
I tend to agree with Paul Bonham on this. All methods of energy transmission have their downsides, as the Japanese are sadly discovering.
I personally applaud your efforts to educate everyone, but I think in general it is mostly a waste of time. People will still assume that we have an unlimited supply of every resource and very few people are going to make actual sacrifices to their quality of life until disaster is upon them. Even then they will not thank you for it.

The uranium company stocks are getting hammered. I have shares in a company which enriches uranium and refuels reactors. As far as I know they refuel about half the reactors in the U.S. and about a quarter of the reactors in the world. It's done on an 18 to 24 month schedule.
If it keep dropping I'll be buying more shares. Why? Because I don't see the need for reactor fuel dropping over the next decade or more.
The current problems will slow down the pace at which coal fired plants are taken out of service, which should be positive for thermal coal.

Don't worry, Tom. The number of jobs created is greatly overstated, often by a factor of three or four times. One of the newspapers did a study on the subsidized green jobs that the Ontario government was touting and found that in almost every case the counts were fiction. Companies reported that they might create jobs if the government handed them buckets of money and then the government reported these potential jobs as actual jobs. Contacting the companies that supposedly created these jobs revealed that the actual results were more modest than the government was reporting.

I think you mean energy creation. Transmission methods are more limited.

I think people would be more receptive to disaster scenarios if the chicken little industry hadn't been saturating us with them for more than forty years without any of them coming to fruition. Resources are unlimited because there are substitutes for everything and the technology for finding and using more of those resources is continuously improving.
It would also help if the chicken littles believed what they were spouting and could show that they believed it by their actions and not just their words. Examples that come to mind are Al Gore claiming sea levels will rise some ridiculous level and then buying beachfront property (though a cynic might wonder if his sea level rant wasn't just a way to drive down the cost of his purchase), not to mention his use of private jets and a house that uses more electricity than the next hundred people he is lecturing to.
I tend to respect what you say more than most other people weighing in on these matters because you seem to be actually walking the walk rather than just talking the talk.

Reason: grammar
... I think you mean energy creation. Transmission methods are more limited. ...
Perhaps I do. Seems to me though that for example the Sun produces energy and we just attempt to harness it for human use. Same with coal. It has the innate ability to be used for energy; all we need to do is figure out how to get it to our homes. BTW, thanks for the compliment further down your post. :-)

Gillanders that Ted Talk and Bill Maher clip were awesome.
Also about the earthquake in Japan I believe Glenn Beck has claimed it is a message from God (he said something like I'm not making that claim but I'm not not making that claim either...it was hilarious).

I was listening to Glenn Beck today and yesterday and the day before and I didn't hear that. I heard him say that the earthquake and disaster in Japan was an opportunity for Americans to show the Japanese that they care by sending a check to the Red Cross for the relief effort in Japan. He said that a lot of people are in need and despite their dire situation there are no riots and no resentment. I believe he used the word heroic to describe the Japanese people or if he didn't, he inferred it.

Pretty soon AGW theories will be confined to the supermarket tabloids where they belong with the news of Bigfoot/Loch Ness monster sightings and alien abduction theories.
Yes Paul, further to your private messages I really do believe what I post here.

Did you see the Nanos poll on the provincial election in todays newspaper? It appears the Premier is writing cheques with his ego that his policies can't cash. The Cons are up to 44%, which is majority territory. More interesting is the Cons haven't even presented their election platform as yet.

Did you watch his radio show on Monday?
The FOX News Commentator told listeners of his radio show on Monday:
"I'm not saying that God is causing earthquakes," then chuckled and added, "Well, I'm not not saying that either."
and he explained,
"I'm not saying God is causing earthquakes... What God does is God's business. But I'll tell you this, whether you call it Gaia or whether you call it Jesus, there's a message being sent," said Beck. "'Hey, you know that stuff we're doing. It's not really working out. Maybe we should stop doing some of it.' I'm just saying."
I think Libya oil exports were roughly 1,600,000 barrels a day before these problems started. We should know the interests of those involved in conflicts.
An excellent free resource for educating yourselves on renewables can be found by googling "Sustainable energy without the hot air". Highly recommended that you download this free book and read it; you will be impressed with the potential of renewables for power generation.
If you are in Ottawa this weekend drop by the Green show at Lansdowne; it is free and there are loads of renewable companies and speakers. Also drop by the Arbour shop when you get a chance; they have my poster on display showing that the Glebe area of Ottawa could supply over 1/3 of its present electrical power needs with rooftop solar; with simple energy efficiency improvements this number would easily go to 2/3 of the total...
The largest energy related health risks to people is from burning fossil fuels; the fossil fuel costs are $120 Billion per year; we are just complacent to these risks and willing to pay the costs (both in health and $) since we have been accepting them for a long time.
The gravest immediate risk is traditional air pollution that comes from the
combustion of coal, oil, and natural gas, which kills 20,000 or more Americans a year, and impairs the health of hundreds of thousands...
Another thought; thankfully there were not too many ozone hole deniers around to block the world action on the Montreal Protocol in 1987 to ban CFCs. I have no doubt that GCB would have been ozone hole deniers...
Most of the cost is to have multiple redundancy to minimize the risk of a failure and radiation leak. We could build them really cheaply if we had no containment building or reactor encasement...Plus the nuclear industry repeatedly shoots themselves in the foot by not standardizing the design and making it modular to lower costs and get uniform consistency and proven designs. Everyone uses their own design, so unless the whole industry gets smarter it will be held back...
Global revenue: solar photovoltaics (PV), wind power and biofuels up 35% last year (versus 2009); growing from $139.1 billion to $188.1 billion
Most of growth was from doubling number of solar PV installations and steady growth in
the biofuels sector.
Global market for solar PV skyrocketed from $2.5 billion in 2000 to $71.2 billion in 2010 and for wind power it surged from $4.5 billion in 2000 to > $60.5 billion today
