General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
So Vlad apparantly believes that the Earth is infinite in size. Probably thinks we live on the surface of an infinite plain. After all Scientists believe the Earth is finite in size and approximately spherical, so they must be wrong. It's all a conspiracy you know.
Life is not a zero sum game Ed. The sooner you realize this, the sooner you will be able to shuck your blinders and open your eyes to the wonder of it all. Every commodity has substitutes. That is why cartels always fail. :)
The numbers I gave are within the legal limit. 18% is not. In the case of such a large amount the funds have to be returned to the consumer or the utility, depending on who has lost on the error.
I know that the suggestion was silly but the idea isn't nearly as silly as some of the proposals from the proponents of AGW.
The state of this debate is like the last few pages of a long Stephen King novel when things start going really bad for the bad guys.
Humanity is only doomed if AGW gloom and doomers are correct. Since they aren't correct, "Don't worry. Be happy!" as the song says.
The slogan of "change" worked for Obama. I don't think it will work anymore. Change is not always good. There will not be any prosperity dividend from your new technologies. Europe is further down the path that you propose for us and I don't see us making the same mistakes as they have. Fission and fusion are the directions that need to be explored.

So how does Vlad plan to go about making the Earth infinite in size? Because it won't matter if it is a zero sum game or not, in the end continued uses of finite resources must cease. If Vlad doesn't understand that, then we may add aritmetic to his areas of invincible ignorance. For he cannot believe his statement unless he disbelieves in arithmetic!
Of course since he denies science it's hardly surprising to see him deny maths!
Oh, and cartels rarely fail as a matter of fact. That's why governments have laws against them and even occasionally enforce those laws.

What facts have you presented to suggest otherwise?
Dan Dennett(wiki-page) in one of his lectures made this comment near the end, saying, something like, "we should stop looking at why 85% of academics don't believe in God, but why 15% do!(I believe he did this lecture at TED)" Now I'm not sure the specifics of the 85% if it is just university professors or also university students. Dawkins in one of his lectures was talking about the rate of religious beliefs in scientific fields where biologists working on evolution had the lowest with 97% being non-religious,skeptical,atheistic etc...
It's not one boy who is crying wolf but nearly the entire scientific community, so I don't think it is something trivial that we should ignore

"Nearly" is a weasel word. Actually, it tells us you can't put a figure on the percentage.
We also don't know if the scientists who aren't in agreement finished at the top of their class or merely scraped through to pick up their degree.
You might have noticed when you go into a doctors office you see the diplomas. I've been in a lot of doctors offices over the years and never once saw the marks they obtained. I've mentioned this to a couple of them and the conversation kind of dries up. :)
Adam, you are correct. Nearly the entire scientific community thinks that ACC (anthropogenic climate change) is occurring rapidly and needs to be dealt with.
My scientific background is Engineering Physics, Master of Science in Physics, I have completed all the courses required for a Ph. D. in Physics; and I am now studying climate change in the Masters program in Geography. I study climate change and there is no uncertainty; climate change is occurring rapidly and humans are having a strong impact with greenhouse gas emissions.
I think it is only fair that we all come clean about our science background.
Vlad; have you studied science at all? I know that you have a business degree?
Gary; what is your science background?
Paul Bonham; what is your science history?
Have you read many books on climate change; and if so what are some of these books?

97%...I've said it numerous times....so has Paul so has Ed, look at all the papers that have this fact, Ed's skeptical science website, etc...etc...

This fetish you have about categorizing perfectly acceptable words as weasel words, it was amusing at first, but now it is just becoming annoying.
If you don't understand the meaning of a word, try looking it up in your dictionary. :p

Let's be clear here. You either have a PH. D in Physics or you don't. Which is it?
You don't have a Masters degree in geography from what you write. You say you're studying climate change but don't say the stage you have acheived.
As for me, I'm the chump whose tax dollars go to pay for the climate change nonsense. A guy who will vote for a political party which will not waste my money supporting this.
I will be perfectly clear. I have a Master of Science in Physics. I do NOT have a Ph. D.; however I completed all the graduate courses to meet the requirement but I did not do the thesis.
I started formal study of climate change at the M. Sc. level in Jan/2010. However I have studied it informally for years.
Do you have any formal degrees in science or other areas? Why should people listen to your comments on a science topic?
