General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
15. Have fun!
(Thanks to Nigel Hanrahan for writing these up!)
The GTCL website allows the TDs post their tournaments
Re: The GTCL website allows the TDs post their tournaments
Another benefits to allow TDs to post the tournaments will increase the GTCL website's visit traffic. The higher traffic rank, the higher value to gain for the GTCL website.
That's the main reason, which I encourage people to post their chess information is providing the convenient way to serve chess community better.
When the GTCL website has the higher rank in the chess sites and it can absorb more and more people eyeballs, which could offer TD's to advertise their tournament effectively.
Another reason, that is William is just a volunteer to do this job. If people think to keep GTCL lower or no cost to run this website, I am seeking the best solution now.
The website rank is changing every day by their traffic. GTCL site is above 1,500,000 and my goal is to bring the rank around 1,000,000 in 2010, so, please help us to pull the website's rank getting higher.
Remember, Mom never refused to prepare a snack for her kids but the kids need grow up and take responsibility for himself and take care for the family, including Mom.

Google "chess Toronto" gives me the GTCL at the first place, and I think that the ranking goal is near.

Re: The GTCL website allows the TDs post their tournaments
I always knew that the chef prepared the meals but I chose what I ordered.
Why should I be dictated how I advertise my tournaments.
All I need to do is let you at the GTCL know that I'm running a tournament.
If you want to telegraph it to the masses that is your site's responsibility not mine.
But I'm not talking about my tournaments I'm talking about some one who has played chess for many years and never used a compute. There are many seniors that I work for who are afraid of that taboo word INTERNET.
If these non-computer savy people want to run their own tournament and want others to come first they need an email address then they have to join your GTCL site then they have to Become a TD and apply for a Role then post their tournament etc etc etc. Why can't they just write you a snail mail letter?
All they want is people to come and play in their tournament they don't want to contribute to a website, to some that means a spider's nest.
When you get 39 TD's advertising on your site then I'll consider asking to get a TD role card. You need to read about Howard Ridout if you want to see how chess grew in Toronto and flurished. But that was long ago before the GTCL.
I know how great the GTCL has not been over the year's. That is one reason I do not support the GTCL.

We only use Alex to see the traffic rank. The keywords from Search Traffic is provided by our site's host, here it is:
Search Keywords (Top 11)
416 different keywords Search Percent
chess 298 17.6 %
toronto 185 10.9 %
2010 58 3.4 %
open 41 2.4 %
guelph 39 2.3 %

winter 24 1.4 %

If you are still confused our GTCL site's keywords stuffs, just use your No.10 keywords to search and see if you can find GTCL website. I have no clue why your No 10 keyword appears on the Alex's website.

Hi John,
I would like happy to help the seniors you above mentioned, who is going to run a chess tournament. Is that everything you ask me to offer my extra volunteer time to help those senior Canadians? No problems, just tell them my email. webmaster@torontochess.org
