How did this turn out? I cannot speak for others, but I would like to know.

I look into my crystal ball.

It is becoming clearer but I still can't see. I look harder.

Now the vision is becoming clearer.

I see that not all those who are invited are accepting their invitation.
I see players wanting to know what board they will play before they accept.
I see players wanting to know about the financing.

Now my crystal ball is becoming murky again...

Your crystal ball might be right... is that the same as the Magic 8-ball?

Naw. My crystal ball is what I use to decide my correspondence chess moves.

I've been thinking of using it to start a new thread for the financial crisis some of the Eurozone nations will face and some other nations as well.

Arnie's California IOU's might be the tip of the iceberg.

Some important dates set by FIDE:
"National Federations planning to participate in the Chess Olympiad 2010 have to register online (http://chess-results.com/olympiad/) by May 20th 2010 on the web-site.
Names of team members must be completed online on the web-site by July 20th 2010. The photos of the participants must also be loaded on the web-site."
The full invitation text at http://www.fide.com/images/stories/n...y_Mansyisk.pdf

                FIDE invitations aren't worth much.

Either last Olympiad or the one before, I forget which, FIDE invited the ICCF to participate. The ICCF chose a team. I seem to recall it was 3 or 4 players who had been ICCF world champions plus Jean.

The ICCF entered the team and after FIDE saw the players they withdrew the entry. Wouldn't let the team play. Some lame excuse about it being for nations. Still, they allowed the blind association team, the Disabled team and another one play and they weren't national teams.

I guess a top 10 finish for the ICCF would not have been helpful for FIDE.

                  Re: Looking for Jean Hebert

If Canada does not get the funds to send an official team could a bunch us Canadian hacks pay our own way and play for Canada?

Not sure why it is not possible. I will email FIDE and ask them. In the meantime I will start a list for the unofficial Canadian mens team that will pay their own way!

                      1st board: Vlad Drkulec
                      2nd board: Paul Beckwith
                      3rd board: Gary Ruben
                      4th board: Ed Seedhouse
                      5th board: Bob Gillanders
                      6th board: Paul Bonham

There is no reason Canada couldn't invite players on the condition they pay their own way. It's not like we're a contender.

Still, if the CFC has money to build a new web site, why don't they have money for the teams which are more chess related?

Maybe we should do a poll. Do you think the CFC can PROPERLY organize a birthday party for 3 or 4 children?

For some reason I can't get my setup to do polls.

A team is only 5 players. Besides, spending a couple of weeks in Siberia in September isn't my idea of the jollies. :)

Anyhow, you'd have to ask those who are qualified first.

If this team actually went, Bob and I would be breaking up constant fights between Paul Beckwith, Vlad, Gary, and Ed. It would certainly be entertaining for all the others!

Maybe no chess would actually get played, and everyone would end up debating climate change and whether Ed should unionize the world's correspondence chess players or not! We'd all be so involved in those debates we wouldn't even realize how quickly the days were going by....

then, on the last day, we could play Texas Hold Em!
                              Only the rushing is heard...
                              Onward flies the bird.

So, Gary declines the invitation! I move up to board 4! :D
