General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Yes I have met Eduard. I stand by my choice of Nikolay.
No problems from me then - just wasn't sure if you had. I do, I guess, share some concerns over the idea that one person's opinion of "how people get along" can have that big an influence on things, but you are on the committee so it might as well be you that is that one person.
As for Jean's comments - I only dislike criticism of organizers if there is no realistic alternate solution being presented. The alternate solution of "use the rating list" seems workable and simple, as opposed to "random weekend organizer should spend at least 100 hours looking for sponsorship for a bunch of IMs.".
Given the cavalier nature of the selection of the Olympic teams in opposition to the traditional practice of continuing down the list to fill the teams rather than allowing the Selection Committee to shoose replacement players, I shall not be making a financial contribution to Olympiad Teams this year.

There are always "realistic alternate solutions". And secondly, I thought that your days of "quoting" me wrong were over. Why this need to make up things or grossly exaggerate them ? Don't you have any point that can stand on plain truth ?
3. The Selection Committee gets to replace the declining wildcard selection, and determines a wildcard replacement - you seem to have Thomas as your second on the wildcard list ( this is my interpretation of how the exisiting Handbook section should be used ).
According to the 1994 precedent, Bob's reasonable approach is incorrect. Then the selection committee chose Ron Livshits, knowing that he probably couldn't play because of studies. At the same time (which was before the start of the 15th and final round of the Zonal) the Selection Committee chose a second player, who was also doing well in the Canadian Zonal, as the alternate. But after Ron officially declined, the CFC decided that Ron (as Selection Committee first choice) should be replaced by a player from the Rating List, who was Tom O'Donnell, rather than by the Selection Committee second choice. This was a surprise to the Selection Committee and to the spurned player, but no protest was made. The precedent had already been established that rating list declines were replaced by rating; this CFC decision established the precedent that other declines should also be filled by rating.
If Ilya Bluvshtein was in any doubt about precedence, he could have asked his Selection Committee for advice. Ron was there in 1994 and again in 2010!
By the way, using the traditional method of precedence, the status of a player such as Kevin Spraggett (or any player whose eligibility is in doubt, for example, because of number of games played) does not matter; if he declines, his place is filled from the rating list. But with the Ilya method, you get different teams depending upon whether he declines or is declared ineligible. I remember that the eligibility of KS (who lives in Portugal) was a hot topic some years ago.
Aside from going against precedent and the flow of the rules, the Ilya method also brings into play tendentious arguments about the status of players "who you knew weren't going to play anyway". On those counts, it is three steps backwards in the method of CFC team selection. It is a great young team, I just wish it could have been arrived at in a more regular way.
Re: Olympiad Selection Process - Replacing the Wildcard
Hi Jonathan:
Thanks for the historical insight.
I am not happy with the 1994 precedent. It seems to me that CFC should want to keep open the possibility of taking a promising player from lower down the rating list, when the wildcard Selection Committee choice declines. All other decliners will be from the Ratings Selection List, so it is still valuable for players to get their ratings up there. I see benefit in one of five being a " wildcard ".
Apparently, as of my last communication with Stijn de Kerpel, V-P, President Eric Van Dusen is still on Presidential Leave of Absence, to deal with some personal matters. He made Stijn " Acting President " in his absence.
But as far as I recollect, none of the remaining 5 Executive have posted here or on the two CFC Discussion Boards in the Olympiad Selection debate.

Bob, Is your proposal consistent with human rights laws?
What's a "promising player"? Someone who's better liked than the qualified person? Someone who is younger? Someone who's not crippled?

Who said I was quoting you? I might have been quoting my over the top heavily exaggerated impersonation of you!
