I didn't realize that it was possible to request BYEs through round 8...

    from the tournament regulations:

"BYES: A maximum of 3 ½ point byes may be taken in rounds 1-8."

I was looking at the pairings for round 5 and was (at first) kind of surprised to see so many BYEs listed at the end...

So as of Round 5, we have:

    - 236 players paired
    - 17 players with a BYE
    - 9 players (presumed) withdrawn

Isn't that quite recently that GM Rozentalis took 4 byes in a nine round Toronto tournament, won his other games and tied for first with 6,5 pts ? The byes allowed him to avoid playing two games in a day... Still the "message" hasn't got through...

you think 2 byes instead of 3 would make a big difference?

I don't know why you ask this question but anyway 2 instead of 3 I believe is 33% less. For you is 33% a big difference ?

          2 of 9 = 22%
          3 of 9 = 33 %

          Diff = 11% :D

Actually, it's 33% less byes still.... the difference is irrelevant, since it's a % thing.

Put another way, going from 2 byes to 3 would be increasing it by 50%.

Thinking like that - what a disaster is going from no byes to only one ;)

It is not only about the number of byes, it is mostly about half point byes instead of ZERO point byes (as is the norm in Europe). When taking half point byes becomes a strategy to win events, some people should wake up but they don't.

It's a divide by zero type thing, and percentages no longer work. By that standard, why use percentages at all to measure increases or decreases?

NOTE: Yes, I realize you were trying to be funny. I just didn't find it as funny as I might have were everything running smoothly.

2 instead of 3 is 33% less, like you say (rounded).
3 instead of 2 is 50% more. An even bigger difference.

This is an example of PsychoBabble. (TM) & (C).

The pairings are what I call PsychoPairings. Is there any other national championship, anywhere, which has used this exact pairing system? Certainly the Inner Galactic Chess Federation does not support them.

26 Stephen Boyd bye bye bye bye B 16 ----

Why does Stephen Boyd have 2.5 points from byes?

I donno but I'd guess the first bye was not requested so it was a full point bye.

Why's such a strong player getting a full point bye in the first round is a better question.

1/2 a point less out of 9 possible points is 5.5%, no 5.5% is not a big difference in the standings, that is the way to look at it I think, what impact it has on a players result in the final standings

its certainly no worse than grandmaster draws which are not just for grandmasters as well we all know

there is a long tradition of byes in tournaments as you know as all players cannot committ to playing each round for family & pesonal committments etc

Maybe he will play after the Arbiters' seminar is over
