Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
CUPE Local 4580 (Graduate and Teaching Assistants at the University of Windsor), is sponsoring several chess tournaments in September starting next week.
There are tournaments on Sept. 11th, 18th, and 25th.
These are 4 round tournaments, with G/60 time controls.
The entry fee is $10. Because of the low entry fee, there isn't much in the way of prize pool.
We currently have commitments from the following players:

One bit of advice for the out of towners and the locals who haven't played at Erie Hall yet, the access to the parking lot on Sunset is blocked because of construction but they have created a temporary entrance off Wyandotte. It is not obvious from the street but it is there, just look for it.
The easiest way to get there for people coming off the 401 is to take the Huron Church road exit and head towards the Ambassador bridge. Just before the bridge get in the right lane on Patricia Avenue for local traffic at which point you will run into some construction signs and a road closed except to local traffic sign at Wyandotte Street. Turn right past the sign (you might have to drive in the left lane so be careful) and Sunset will be fenced off for construction but then you can hang a left into the parking lot across the temporary entrance (some tar paving to ramp up to the sidewalk and into the lot). There are usually lots of spots there on the weekend.
If the construction situation has changed and you can't park in the designated lot there are other lots. Look for one with the gate up. Those are free. There is a big lot on University Avenue by Assumption Church and the CAW student centre which says $3 parking (it used to be $1 when I attended) but it won`t be attended and parking is free on weekends but then you will have to walk across the somewhat small campus to get to Erie Hall.

Yeah, I'll officially cancel the tournament this Saturday. The room is still booked though, so if someone would like to have a tournament (so if enough kids tell John Coleman that they want to play), then the room can be used.
There was a tie in the very strong top section, with Vlad Drkulec and Denton Cockburn both scoring 3 points. This should give Vlad a new record high rating after his stellar performance at the Toronto Labour Day Open (he gained 76 points there). The odd number of players did make for a long day though, as we tried to ensure everyone got in 4 games.
Brendon Lee seriously performed better than his rating. He managed to finish with a whopping 2218 performance rating, scoring a win against Steve Demmery from London, who blundered a winning position in time trouble. Brendon's looking at gaining over 80 points from this tourney!
In the B section Herb Alice and Joseph Zhou split first with 2.5/4. Joseph picked up a huge amount of rating points. He may even break the 1600 mark, or come close to it. He had also picked up some points when in he played in the NAYCC. So he's definitely in form. We definitely would like to welcome Herb to tournament chess. Tying for first is definitely a good way to introduce yourself. Herb's only loss in the tournament was to Melissa Lee in the final round.
In the Juniors section, Michael O'Neil won his first tournament. He scored a impressive 3.5/4. I think Michael has placed in the top 3 in all tournaments he's played all summer. If he keeps up his level of performance, he'll be competing with the B section players pretty soon. Minya Bai came second with a pretty good 3/4 (!). She also will pick up some rating points. Minya has been doing very well in her tournaments as well this summer. She's played well against strong players like Joshua Myers and Hanyuan Ye
