Ya Eric's right, I misread Vlad's performance as average rating. Based on his results, his fide should be around 1950-2050 even though his performance is much higher than that. The first fide rating is solely based on average rating of his opponents

you sure? i believe that's the case only if you score above 50%. if you score 50% or below your "rating performance" is your performance rating. if you score above, it's average rating of opponents + 10 points for every (win minus loss) you have

in other words, scoring 6.5/7 only garners him a rating performance 60 points higher than what scoring 3.5/7 would

that's how it was a couple years ago when i obtained a rating anyway
everytime it hurts, it hurts just like the first (and then you cry till there's no more tears)

          From the FIDE Handbook:

8.2 Determining the Rating 'Ru' in a given event of a previously unrated player.

8.21 If an unrated player scores less than 1 point in his first rated event, or he plays fewer than 3 rated opponents in any event, his score is disregarded.

First determine the average rating of his competition 'Rc'.

          (a) In a Swiss or Team tournament: this is simply the average rating of his opponents.

8.22 If he scores 50%, then Ru = Ra

8.23 If he scores more than 50%, then Ru = Ra + 12.5 for each half point scored over 50%

8.24 If he scores less than 50% in a Swiss or team tournament: Ru = Rc + dp

          8.25 If he scores less than 50% in a round-robin: Ru = Ra + dp x n/(n+1).

Based on the above, Jason would have a rating of 1947 after 7 rounds (but he needs 9 FIDE-rated opponents before the rating is published, assuming he doesn't have any from previous events).

Unfortunately, someone told the interviewer that this was the best performance ever by a Canadian - overlooking Jeff Sarwar (WYCC Champion U10 in the mid 80s) [edit: and Julia Sarwar]

7.5/9, according to En Passant #82 (December 1986); Julia scored 5.5 as top female.

"Jason Cao from Canada pulled an all-important victory in the last round, against the direct rival for top places Cameron Wheeler, and thanks to the draw on the top board, he earned the gold medal on better additional criteria. Jeffrey Xiong (USA) takes home the silver, and Puranik Abhimanyu edged his fellow Indian Gupta Bhaskar to claim the bronze."
