General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
John Carmack is probably one of the greatest computer programmers of all time. I really hope he never gives up his day job. I tend to upgrade my computer with every release of id softwares games.
Getting into space is is SIDE job :) He spent 2 million so far and has a working prototype. All this from a guy who has little education but is self taught. A true genius.
Well, I hope he figures out a way to get back down before he takes off.:)
Is his ambition to get out of the atmosphere to weightlessness or to go somewhere, like around the moon?
So, how do you like the depression so far? Close to a 900 point drop on the TSX today (Monday) and there's still 2 weeks to go before the election.
People still believe that the moon landing was faked? The moon landing conspiracy is dumb. Let's talk about the Kennedy assassination instead man, that's my favourite topic.

I never had much of an opinion on the Kennedy assassination. I did note Gerald Ford, who was a member of the Warren Commission, went on to become vice-president and then president.
You realize if someone wanted to film the landing in the desert and feed it into mission control it would have been like a closed circuit feed. Not many would have had to know. The test of a conspiracy theory often fails when the number of people who know about it is large.
From what I knew of the technolgy back then I don't think they had the technology to land a lander on the moon, lift off and make a perfect redocking with the space ship. They did have the technology to work a closed circuit feed.
For me it comes down to which scenario is more likely. You might choose a different scenario than I have and that's OK.
I don't believe we are discussing moon landing and Kennedy assassinations. I thought this was a chess board. Has it come to this?
Come on guys. If the moon landings had been faked, don't you think the Russians would have been all over it, denouncing it as fake??
Let's stick to chess.
Hi Garland,
Probably you're reading this thread because someone rang a bell and welcomed everyone to the derpression a couple of weeks ago. It was probably pretty funny then and less funny today.
You probaby read the posts where I have railed against the failure of the government to allow chess parents write off chess camps and activities because they aren't cardio workout and chess isn't active enough. Now I think the promise of new deductions has to do with music lessons and the arts so maybe chess lessons will be included for tax deductions. I anyone here knows for sure maybe they will tell us.
Message boards get read and unhappy special interest groups get taken into consideration at election time. In our system the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
I know the posts often get off topic. To answer your off topic question :) I don't think the Russians could prove it was a fake. You have to remember the times were such that the hockey series between Canada and Russia in 1972 (?) was widely seen as our political system against theirs. So was the Fischer - Spassky world championship match. So we return to chess.

First of all, the fact that you didn't understand his reference proves what a dirty philistine you really are.
Second of all, you didn't know anything about the technology back then.
everytime it hurts, it hurts just like the first (and then you cry till there's no more tears)
Rather than promote this thread any further than this, let's converse the moon landing conspiratory theories privately. It's not worth the bandwidth.
I'm not really interested in debating it again. You have your view and reasons and I have no problem with that. I have my view and reasons.
In an earlier post I compared it to belief in religion and the tooth fairy. Really, it's not. I believe in religion but know there is a tooth fairy. After all, when I was small the tooth fairy came to me and when I got older I was the tooth fairy. :)
More to the point on the topic, do you think the U.S. and Canadian governments will print their way out of the current problems? I see our government has injected another 4 Billion into our system. They call it "liquidity". :)
Probably they'll increase the deposit insurance coverage in the U.S. and Canada to try to stop runs on banks.
Welcome to the depression. If your cell phone goes off during the game you will lose. The toilet roll dispenser will withdraw, the toilet will flush and the stall door will be open.
How do you like the depression so far?
Since I first started this thread almost 3 weeks ago there have been some dramatic changes in the world financial situation.
Sometimes I write stuff both here and on another message board which hits so close I kind of wish I hadn't written it. The TSX has lost about 1500 points since I wrote that on Sept. 15th.
So how did I come to my conclusion.
WELL, you know that computer everyone thinks I use for Correspondence Chess? I call it "Crystal Ball". I fire it up and get it to spew out piles of garbage. Then, the idea is to interpret the garbage and come to conclusions. My input, the computers output and my own interpretations based on positional considerations and current theory and past results.
Now if you looked at the situation back on Sept. 15th and came to a different conclusion than I did you probably should stay away from Correspondence Chess. It's not likely to be you game.
I guess I should get my computer to tell me what will come next.

I asked. The reply was such that I'm not going to tell for fear your will laugh at me.
There's an election in a week or so. We are being told by politicians our economy is in good shape. That's not what the TSX is telling me. The complete honesty of the stock index is the indicator I use for direction on the health of our economy.
Before I went to bed last night I put in a ridiculous stink bid for a stock. When I woke up this morning the stock index was off almost 1200 points and I had been filled. Money making company and an 8 per cent dividend. Go figure.
Oil and gas stocks hold no interest for me.
