Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Fide regulations are interesting, to say the least.
Section D.02 covers zonal compettions.
"8.5 The Zonal tournaments must be conducted according to FIDE standards for times and rates of play. The relevant Continental President of FIDE must approve the playing schedule. "
And in section C.01, titled Recommendations for organization of top level tournaments:
"3.2 There must be no main playing session before 13.00 hours, local time. "
"3.3 To maintain the rhythm, all rounds must begin at the same hour, the last round being no exception. Preferred starting time is 15.00 hours."
But here comes the loophole. Back to D.02:
"7.2 If in a Zone it is not possible to hold a zonal tournament under the conditions of these regulations, the Zonal President is empowered to hold the tournament under modified conditions. "

No two game/day event can be considered "top level", even by canadian standards. It means playing chess without proper rest, without enough time to eat, sleep or exercise properly. It means also no time to prepare for individual games, which is closely linked to serious chess, and even more so to "top level chess". Even if financial conditions for titled players have been improved, this should not be accomplished at the price of making the Canadian Closed a simple extended weekender, which would be I believe a terrible first in canadian chess History. What's next? A five round weekender ? This is simply not acceptable.
On the basis of the current bid, I believe that further sponsors/donations (a futher one or two thousand dollars, maybe) should be seeked in order to extend the event to a minimum of seven days (two days at most with two games to be played) and preferably to nine days. Among the current sponsors I do not find CMA (has it been approached?) . Historically they rarely say "no" to worthy chess causes and now that their mortgage is all paid for... :)
This is too important to leave it as it is. The Canadian championship should not be played under such a half-serious formula which ruins the quality of chess and makes for a gruelling and unpleasant chess experience for everyone.

I do agree that the 5 day schedule is brutal. Under the circumstances the bid is good and very appreciated but I'm worried about the 2 games/day. From all my experiences in the big gambling-like American swiss events with quick schedules the rate of play deteriorated way too much for my liking. It could turn out as an advantage for me over older folks but not quite the way you'd like to try to win the national title.
I'm happy to see Jean gave it at least 24 hours before complaining about the conditions.
I don't think anyone is presenting this bid and saying "Ha, screw Linares, look what WE'VE put together!". This is what the marketplace is willing to do. And to be honest, I like the idea of external preparation playing a lesser part, but that's because I like chess as a 1-1 competition, rather than a study hall + exam session.

Does the marketplace want Ponomariov, Khalifman and Rustam K. as "world champions"?
Why is not Gelfand a "world champion" - he won the same competition like the others?
Jean, once you get to 2600 fide you can complain about the conditions, until then, be happy that Hal actually put in a bid and the event is actually happening. Quit whining like a princess, you need the whole day to eat, sleep, and "exercise"? This isn't a million dollar event backed up by national sponsors: It's just a chess tournament.

Hey sumo is a sport and you won't catch sumo wrestlers with their soup bowls out trying to cajole organizers into appearance fees. Just saying. Sumo is more popular in Japan than chess will ever be in North America.
