I have been approached by a resort in the Lauentians, about 1 hour north of Montreal, to hold a chess tournament at their location during the summer of 2011. This place has everything a family would enjoy at a price you will never see north of Toronto :). However my staff tells me that I am crazy (they use kinder words than that :).
They say...chess and family are not compatible!
On this board the majority of posters rarely or no longer take part in rated competition (no I did not play in Bermuda...my girlfriend preferred to opt for a non chess thingie in Fort Lauderdale...and after I had lost every game to Fritz in training for Bermuda...it was easy for me to agree :).
But we all love the game.
So here is my idea. There would be a section that is not rated. Games would be 60 minutes per player. Two games a day. Lots of door prizes for this section. No place prizes. Since there is lots of off time...we are looking at a BBQ...etc...between and after rounds.
Lots of fun....and we would have a traditional event at the same time which would be FQE rated.
So posters like J.K., Gary, Kerry, Chris, etc, etc ...would you come?
I need 40 players in the non-competitive section @ $40 for 5 games...to make it do-able.
We are looking to break even on this project. If we see a great response then it would become annual and it could become a CMA Anniversary Festival....which would be my dream!...and CMA could add money to the pot.
Bridge is very successful with bridge cruises...chess has tried...and failed. The clientele is totally different...in France chess and ski works...well I have seen it advertised...I have no idea how they made out...so is my staff right...family and chess do not mix??
