General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
Gary, this has not happened before in March. Never. I was outside for about one hour and my skin is all tight, this happens when the uv index is high. I must try and see what the ozone levels are like this year, last year ozone was down 40% in the unprecedented hole.
Gary, you are an elderly person, who has no doubt lived a good life. I doubt the young of today will be able to have that priviledge. Show some respect and empathy for todays youth, what type of a life will they be having. With changes this fast I do know what will happen, this is just the start.

Yes, I suppose we all try to live a good life. However, life is also about loss and pain.
I've long ago stopped fighting the battles I don't think I can win. LIfe is here and it's now and it's what we make of it, the way I see things. If there is something after then it's a bonus.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
I took a long walk today along the Ganatchio trail which is by Sand Point beach. Sightings of hot women wearing flattering clothing = 16 including one very hot blonde wearing a skimpy bikini. Global warming due to end of ice age = priceless. Please can I have more of it?

We (my wife and I) went to the cemetery to tidy up a bit. We usually don't go until late April when it warms up.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
What do you think of the new pricing and rules for wind and solar the provincial government announced earlier today?
Have you seen the conservative attack ads on Bob Rae? I guess they don't want him to win the liberal party leadership. Rae has been a nightmare for the Conservatives. It was Rae who moved the non confidence motion which defeated the Joe Clark government. After Rae moved to provincial politics, the Conservatives won the most seats in the provincial election. They were something like about 5 seats short of a majority. Bob Rae made the agreement with David Peterson which made the liberal Peterson the Premier and ended more than 40 years of Conservative rule in Ontario.

I think the pricing is still too high and "the most generous in the world" as advertised by one of the local solar companies. It should reduce the stampede a bit and still bankrupt Ontario if enough producers are able to take advantage of it. Apparently Ontario Hydro has hit the producers with extra charges to hook up with the grid, further reducing the supposed guaranteed return. The whole scenario is very iffy for an individual considering taking advantage of this new gold rush.

I would wait until Rae wins to start poisoning the water. Rae has some baggage that will hurt him in the future. He is a known quantity. There is no need to play the cards so early. There is the perception that this Tory attack ad strategy helped to derail Dion and Ignatieff, but the fact is that their own ineffectiveness and the policies that they promoted and their election tactics had more to do with their demise than some negative ads did.
If the conservatives can reign in their own excesses they have pretty smooth sailing through the next election. A lot is riding on the NDP choice of a party leader and at the moment I can see the Liberals returning to their role as the official opposition but of course things can change quickly.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
I don't think Ontario will end up bankrupt. People should expect to pay for the electricity they get and the companies should expect to be paid for the electricity they deliver. No more, no less. For people who don't have fixed rate contracts for natural gas and electricity, the price of electricity may well be up but the price of natural gas this winter is likely less due to the weather. If they heat with electricity that should also be lower due to the warm weather. Rising property taxes is a bigger problem. There are some big companies involved in wind. Transalta runs wind at Wolfe Island, On. and Shelburne, On. They produce around 400 MW of electricity from wind. It's not an insignificant amount.
It might well be worse for those wanting to hook solar up to the grid. I haven't kept up on that. One company in Ontario is trying to sell its photowatt division in Ontario and has been for some time.
Unless you think the federal NDP can repeat in Quebec they won't be a force in the next election. I see the Liberals making a return and judging by the attack ads on Rae the conservatives do as well. The conservatives aren't really doing that well. The passed laws against Air Canada to keep the airline running and so far haven't been able to enforce that law. The thing is if Rae wins as Liberal leader (if he even runs for the position) the conservatives will need a majority every time. Rae knows how to work minority governments.
Do you think Ontario is building for a non confidence vote and an election this year? The federal attack ads on Rae and the Ontario bashing in general could be a lead up to a non confidence vote and election. If they can get the NDP to go along with it. Horwath seems to me to be satisfied with what she has right now.

In other words Gary you are over the hill and when it comes your time there may unfortunately not be an ice flow to send you adrift on to your endgame reward. We may have to give you a Viking funeral instead which would then add to global warming. Irony upon irony.

I don't know about the Viking funeral. I never liked the heat that much. :) Cremation is expensive. They use a lot of natural gas. Probably the environmentalists don't know.
Anyhow, just so I make it to the big chess game in the sky. Maybe Capablanca will spot me a rook.

If the Liberals smarten up we won`t end up bankrupt. Ontario can`t afford to have higher energy costs than its competitors for manufacturing jobs which for the most part are the U.S. as they have already lost most of the jobs that can go to China and India and Asian countries.

Hard to say that the NDP will manage to maintain their position in Quebec but only time will tell. Quebec is pretty volatile politically. I don`t think the liberals are that exciting to Quebec.
I don`t see any point at trying to defeat the Ontario Liberals at this point as the NDP and Conservatives are not logical coalition partners and another election would not return a different result.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
You're probably right about no Ontario election in the near future, although, going another few years and possibly watching their leader blow another lead can't be appealing. Right now I think the Cons are leading in the polls. Come election time in a few years they might not be. McGuinty is a better campaigner than Hudak. He presents a more positive image and message on TV and that's what it's all about.
In this riding the federal conservative beat the incumbent liberal. The provincial election did not have an incumbent in this riding. The Liberals won by a lot. The federal and provincial riding boundaries are the same. Which brings up the question of why the vote changed in such a short time from conservative to liberal if it wasn't image and message.

The provincial and federal parties and their supporters are not the same though there may be a great deal of overlap between the two. Hudak has a habit of putting his foot in his mouth. Harper has managed to reign in this tendency as a result of bitter experience. For a lot of people it may come down to a question of the devil they know versus the devil they don't know. In both cases the incumbant governments managed to hang on to power. There is also a tendency to want a counterbalance between the provincial and federal parties.
I don't like the provincial liberal energy policies and I don't like their tendency to tax and spend but beyond that I don't really see that much difference in their policies and what the conservatives would have done had they won. Both the liberals and conservatives would have been constrained by the situation that they found themselves in after the election.
We always get the government that we deserve, and may God have mercy on our souls. I think the Liberals in Toronto and the Conservatives in Ottawa are both relatively positive for chess. Billions will be wasted on green energy but at least there will be a few crumbs off the table for chess.

Here's the big question. Would it cost less for the government to build something like nuclear reactors or for a private company to build a wind farm and be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep for a bit higher cost in electricity?
There's the gas fired electric power plant in Mississauga which was simply halted. Wonder how much that will cost. Talk of relocating it but no date or location. Probably we'll pay for this as "stranded debt" but it will still likely be hundreds of millions. Just spread out over lots of bills and months.
