General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
I am giving a CMOS (Canadian Meteorologist and Oceanographic Society) talk in Ottawa on January 19th on the following:
Title: Abrupt climate change
Abstract:
Top level view of recent science on the Arctic discussed, including:
-record sea-ice melt
-enormous methane emissions
-unprecedented ozone hole
-record level of weather extremes in 2010, 2011 around planet
-extreme teleconnection values for Arctic Oscillation, North Atlantic
Oscillation
Additional information:
Research published by N. Shakhova* shows that methane is already venting
into the atmosphere from seabed methane hydrates on the East Siberian
Arctic shelf, or ESAS (the world's largest continental shelf), which, if
allowed to escalate, would likely lead to abrupt and catastrophic global
warming.
The latest available data indicates there is a 5-10% possibility of the
Arctic being ice free in September by 2013, more likely 2015, and with 95%
confidence by 2018. This, according to the recognised world authorities on
Arctic sea ice, Prof. Wadhams and Dr. Wieslaw Maslowski, is the point of
no return for summer sea ice. Once past this point, it could prove
impossible to reverse the retreat by any kind of intervention. The data
indicate the Arctic could be ice free for six months of the year by 2020
(PIOMAS 2011).
The latest research expedition to the region (September/October 2011),
according to Professor I. Semiletov, witnessed methane plumes on a
"fantastic scale," "some one kilometer in diameter," "far greater" than
previous observations, which were officially reported in 2010 to equal
methane emissions from all the other oceans put together.

Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
Well, Paul, with the number of underwater volcanoes, many of which were previously unknown, AND the number of underwater fissures, I'd expect to find methane gas.
Are you also against coalbed methane?
For what it's worth, I think the enviromentalists might have a point regarding the pipeline to the U.S. going across the aquifer in Nebraska, I think it is. I have a hard time keeping up on all those American states.
The last time I was in the U.S., which is decades ago, some guy at the restaurant was picking lint our of his toe nails with an Arkansas Toothpick. That looked real classy. It worked out OK so I guess it wasn't the first time he had done that.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
Welcome to the new year.
2011 and 2010 were years with the most extreme weather on the planet since 1816 (supervolcano Tambora erupted in 1815, 1816 was known as the year without a summer in which snow stayed on the ground in North America throughout the entire year). I fully expect that this extreme weather will continue, and even worsen, expecially when we have the next El Nino year superimposed on top of the strong climate change signal.
Maybe I should change my handle to be Paul Beckwith TAC since I was recently awarded the Top Action Creator (TAC) designation!
Notice that this thread has no activity from the unnamed climate denial community unless I post about climate change. Not surprising, they have nothing to post on their own, all they can do is deny, deny, deny, and attack the messanger...

I think 'TAC Esq.' has a nicer ring! :)

I think you ducked most of my response to you. Anyhow, here is the upcoming weather for Whale Cove for Wednesday.
Whale Cove, Canada
Forecast Details:
Sunshine along with some cloudy intervals. Dangerous wind chills approaching -50F. High -16F. Winds NNW at 10 to 20 mph.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
Wacky and wild weather continues, thanks to climate change...40 degrees F above normal...amazing to witness the planet in the throes of abrupt climate change...does not bode well for humanity or flora or fauna...

The first sentence of the article makes it an opionion article. It proposes a cause which is arguable. The fact seems to be he's writing about weather and not climate.
Did you catch this article? Is it a case of priorities?
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
Thanks for posting that link above Gary, I had not been aware of it. I seems to indicate a strengthening of the undergraduate base at the expense of the graduate school base; certainly not what people were expecting.
Bottom line is that in 2010 and 2011 events heat wave events that differ from the norm by 3 sigma or more occurred over 17% and 10% of the globe, respectively. This compares to 3 sigma events usually covering < 1% of the globe...We are only into the second week of January and already we have had 1000s of heat records broken with the heat wave in the U.S. plains. This is abrupt change...No opinion necessary, it is an observation...
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
The Motley Fool which is an well known investment advisor newsletter sent out an email which starts:
Have You Been Tricked by the Green Energy Hype? If NOT...
President Obama has fallen for the hype. So has billionaire T. Boone Pickens, and dozens of other venture capitalists — losing a truly sickening amount of "green" on alternative energy.
The sorry truth is... despite an exhaustive search, alternative energy has been a BIG disappointment for taxpayers and for investors.
There is a slideshow which continues on in that vein.
