General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
First I would like to state that I like Brana and Zeljka from MonRoi.
The only time I hired them was for the 2010 North American Youth Championship last summer in Montreal. Zeljka came to the site prior to the event to make sure transmission would be seamless. She did a great job! We hired them from start to finish at what I consider to be a very reasonable price. Could we have done it ourselves? Yes we could have used their system at no charge (CMA owns 4 units and a hub...we loaned our 4 units to the 2011 Canadian Closed - free of charge) but I preferred having them on-site.
Organizers in Canada such as Brian Raymer, Hal Bond, Brian Fiedler (and me!), think they make the life of an organizer soooooo much easier.
I don't think a MonRoi rep is in Guelph. I think whoever is running the MonRoi system is basically learning as they go along after receiving a crash course. Yes, this is speculation, but I was talking to Zeljka last week and she said she couldn't be there for the beginning of the tournament.
For what it's worth, I think the guys are doing a great job, I'm viewing the games no problem. Yes, there have been glitches. Lets get behind them instead of just criticizing. They are doing the best they can. While that may not be acceptable to many people, it is a fact, let them work things out.
Please take under your consideration that the whole Canada chess players want to watch that event ... and not that only! There is a big responsibility (Mon Roi) for that to those people, don't you think so!?

What went wrong in Guelph?
Let's get the facts first.
I am not so sure that one of these organizers agrees with you right now. Wait until you get the Bond facts straight, as you say... I note that Chris Mallon certainly does not agree with you, but of course you gave a list of "organizers".
In the meantime one fact is known : so far coverage has been inadequate and unreliable. When you get late broadcasts, senseless positions and illegal moves, you can kiss good bye to your audience.
I too like the Monroi people very much but eventually the pink glasses must be taken off. Even when everything goes perfectly which is not often, the Monroi system cannot be used for fast games (which is mostly what kids events are all about !) and during time pressures people go back to the paper sheets ! If the thing had any future, it would have strong chinese competition by now, especially at 349$ per unit.

I can only imagine how much you regretted dropping $350 for a single purpose device... I understand the need to "lock" the device into game score mode so that it cannot be used for any other purpose during a game, but that kind of money starts to sound like an Ipad to me... a MUCH more useful device. Paper score sheets (carbonless ones at that) make a lot more sense. Of course, broadcasting games is another matter altogether - there are competing interests at work, as always. The DGT boards are solid, but expensive and not quite as portable as a handful of Monroi and the server...
In my opinion, Monroi must reduce the price point and work out the technical "glitches" (of course we don't have the whole story from the Closed, but if it is that easy to have problems, then there are fundamental issues to be dealt with).

Come on Kerry. You have read my pieces of wisdom :) long enough to know that I would never do such a thing. Nevertheless I am in a position to offer Mr Gillanders an excellent deal. But I am afraid that Mr Bob is just talking as usual. He has no intention to buy a Monroi, which by the way would not spite me at all if he did. Quite the opposite. I would be happy for him. :)

ok, true enough - I should have guessed that you may have acquired a device in some other way... I can't see Bob using a Monroi, but if I do, I might take a picture with my phone - which has a convergence of different technology...

Larry
I have no facts about any problems occurring in 2011.
However, there are these facts:
The Monroi site currently has a Google warning on it.
The system has been out for around 5 years with absolutely no significant changes or upgrades to the technology.
The system has not seen any drastic reduction in price, despite the use of older technology which should be significantly cheaper now. It doesn't do anything a Nintendo DSi can't do, in fact it does far less, and costs almost triple the price.
I will say that once we were able to get in touch with Monroi in 2009, they did manage to solve our problems. The point is that this should be a mature system by now, and relatively dummy proof. I'm very good with computers, and I was totally unable to get it working by myself. And I'd already helped others use the system in the past, so I had some knowledge going in!
I also know quite a few people who own them and no longer use them, despite how much they paid. Isn't that saying something?
I've been present for a few of the rounds of the zonal, while playing in the Pro-Am event. There is no Monroi technician on-site. However, every time I walked into the TDs room, I saw someone fiddling with the devices, trying to fix some of the online relay problems.
It seems to me there are a few people with little appreciation for what the organizers are doing. As I understand it, they're learning about the Monroi challenges as the event progresses. As far as I know, there's no written contract with the zonal organizers to provide live coverage of the games.
There surely is an audience of interested Canadians following the event, but it's not like the organizers are selling a product. They understand there's a fan base and try to meet their wishes, while if anything losing money (and countless hours of additional work) on the whole Monroi adventure. Many people have been spoiled by live coverage of past events and now seem to take it for granted. I wanted to watch some zonal games, I went to Guelph and played some chess myself while watching some pro-level stuff. In other years, I've played through the games after the event was over. It's not like these games won't be widely available to the public very soon.
The organizers' team, from what I've witnessed, are doing a great job providing the players with a highly organized event, attending to the players' wishes and demands. Surely that must be a priority over pleasing chess-talkers.
Having said that... now that I just left Guelph, I'll hope to be able to follow the games online as they become available!
