            GM Thomas Roussel-Roozmon

            Hi Marcus:

But I can't find Thomas' name on the Open Section pre-registration list - is he giving a simul, but not playing?

              Marcus, Bob,

Unfortunately, Thomas cancelled for non-chess reasons. We'll look forward to inviting him to Toronto another time.

I am a 1700+ player with no FIDE rating playing in the open section where the majority of players have a FIDE rating. How many games against FIDE rated players will I need to get a FIDE rating? Thank you in advance for any infomation.

Nine. But partial results are saved for three (I think) years.

I'm kinda curious why there's only 3 sections, U1600, U2000 and open, shouldn't there be like a U2200 or something to bridge the gap? cause basically all the expert players are kinda forced to play in the open and the only players in the U2000 section are like 1500s-1700s. It`s kinda faulty formatting imo

                            Hi Bindi,

It looks like they are compensating for this (lack of an U2200 section) in an acceptable manner by giving three U2200 prizes, which is fine for experts I believe. In this way expert level players like myself have a chance to learn against titled players while having real chances for prize money.

Tournaments like Hart House and more recently Hamilton have been a bit shy of the mark here, by not giving a prize fund for such a group. In Hamilton I joked with Egorov and Sambuev about giving my money to Sambuev before the tournament begins. At least that way I might get a lesson for my money instead of just donating it. All joking aside this should be addressed, especially when there is a large amount of experts playing.

Returning to the Canadian Open, perhaps a concern from titled players might be too many lowbies getting in the way of things, however. I would completely understand that perspective.

Re: Canadian Open July 8-17 questions

The Canadian Open should keep its traditional one-section format. The yo-yo effect can be resolved by using accelerated (or more exotic) pairing systems. Leave the multi-section tournaments for weekends when it's hard to get a single winner in a one-section (4-6 rounds) event. 9 (or 10) rounds is enough to eliminate multiple perfect scores at the end.
