General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
I wonder why the CFC has not decided to publish its newsletter in book form once a year. Is it because its finances are in such good health that making some extra money has no appeal at all ?
Clearly this is a no-brainer because there are very little risks involved here. A print run of say 300 copies would self-financed itself within weeks and then bring in clear profits.

Especially if a trial run used print-on-demand systems like www.lulu.com ...
(not necessarily recommending that site - I am sure there are many)
Jean, what method(s) do you use to publish your annual book?

Actually, this idea has occurred to me.
Are we talking about a "best of" annual edition, a complete hard copy print of all 12 issues, or something in between? We need to answer this question first.
It would be risk free if we could sell out enough copies to break even before we began work. So what would be our optimal selling price?
You're suggesting 300 copies is self financing, would you care to share the math with us? :D

I don't think the difference in price between "best of" and "all of" would be that much (unless there isn't much 'best of' - lol) Perhaps a compendium of the issues for the year could be edited to omit the advertisements/rating lists/ etc. that have a "best before date" and need not be in the annual issue at all...
First thing would be to figure out how much it might cost (ballpark) for an issue (having decided what an issue actually *is*) and then see if there is enough interest at that price point + small profit.
I'd prefer a complete set although I would probably still purchase a "Best of..." if that was all that was on offer.
Interesting idea. Some things to consider would be to publish them with everything from each issue, or exclude things like the rating pages, coming events, ads, etc.
To me, it would make sense to publish all the articles and Across Canada. Such a book, if published yearly, would still be quite large, somewhere around 500 pages give or take a few.

You beat me to the punch by 2 minutes!
You are exactly right. To find out our market, we could put a survey in a future issue.

I see we had a similar idea (to omit the dated stuff...), but to your point about 500 pages: I don't know if a significant reduction in pages could be had by reducing the overall font to that of printed books (perhaps the font is already that size?) or making diagrams/pictures smaller and reflowing the columns etc. That starts to sound like a serious amount of 'rework' though.

Yes, reducing the font size would require an entire relayout, a bit of work for sure. However, if there is a market for it, I would do it.
How would it be marketed? Via message board and the CFC store?
I remember having CCCA stuff sitting here for years. Have you ever seen 150,000 chess postcards sitting on your basement floor? Lovely, just errrr... lovely. :)

Ideal Price Point - $29.95 plus GST
We would pick up 30 copies if we get a respectible discount. I would say selling 100-150 copies is very doable. I would base my budget on selling 100 copies...with everything above that being just great Thank You :)....and that without much effort. If the CFC wants to sell more than 150 copies then...it will require work :)
Hébert's book sells for $36.95 (French books are more expensive than English books). His layout is A+. Analysis of games by an IM....and if he has takers in France...he should, with work, sell his 300 copies.
Neil Sullivan published a book of his best games. He worked hard on the book and worked hard at selling it. If he had not done the legwork for sales...it would not have sold. I don't know the final sales numbers (well...not final because it is still in print :)...maybe Neil can tell us more.
BTW, Chess'n Math is the publisher of the books for kids by Jeff Coakley. His best selling book "Winning Chess Strategy for Kids" is considered a must buy in the English language countries...and we have done extremely well with it.
We are talking about a big book here, the definitive collectors book for Canadian Chess activity for 2011. Hard cover, limited edition. Make it something extraordinary.

Price $75 - $150 :D
Profits go to the Olympic fund. :)
Let's break out of this cheap mode!
Am I crazy?
You are allowed to dream...that is the beauty of life in Canada :)...at that price...you are looking at 50 - 75 copies sold...over the next 2 years :)
