Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links

12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
You are allowed to dream...that is the beauty of life in Canada :)...at that price...you are looking at 50 - 75 copies sold...over the next 2 years :)

This should be a project for the Past President or Vice President to embark on next year. Shouldn't take any more than a month to determine the optimal selling point. Tony's quick estimate on the production cost rule out $29.99 as a selling point or probably even $39.99, if we're considering publishing all of the topical material.

The whole idea is very unfocused at this point, but worth pursuing. When Tony gave us an estimate on the cost, I felt we could pare it down to a "best of", reducing the production costs - keeping a "reasonable" price. Bob has other ideas.;)
We would pick up 30 copies if we get a respectible discount. I would say selling 100-150 copies is very doable. I would base my budget on selling 100 copies...with everything above that being just great Thank You :)....and that without much effort. If the CFC wants to sell more than 150 copies then...it will require work :)
Hébert's book sells for $36.95 (French books are more expensive than English books). His layout is A+. Analysis of games by an IM....and if he has takers in France...he should, with work, sell his 300 copies.
Neil Sullivan published a book of his best games. He worked hard on the book and worked hard at selling it. If he had not done the legwork for sales...it would not have sold. I don't know the final sales numbers (well...not final because it is still in print :)...maybe Neil can tell us more.
BTW, Chess'n Math is the publisher of the books for kids by Jeff Coakley. His best selling book "Winning Chess Strategy for Kids" is considered a must buy in the English language countries...and we have done extremely well with it.

The book was available through CMA and remains so through lulu.com, amazon.com and direct from me. I can confirm that I have sold more than 300 hard copies and about 150 file downloads.
There is a market for quirky chess books and dedicated collectors who will hunt them down to acquire them. Of course, you do need to push to get yours noticed. Word of mouth is crucial.
In my opinion, no decent book can lose money if you only look at the production costs. That said, for most of us it needs to be a labor of love; one that won't pay minimum wage! :)
Especially if a trial run used print-on-demand systems like www.lulu.com ...

Jean, what method(s) do you use to publish your annual book?
I find a local printer whose price I like and then order. :) For CCN I would publish it as is, minus the replay links pages and possibly some ad pages that appear more than once. There is no point in redesigning the layout which is already very good.
The critical decision is about the number of copies to be printed. But yearly volumes of CCN are likely to keep selling for a long time if not for ever. You just need a bit of storage space.
Could be more to add to my "storage space" (already about 36 shelf-feet of bound magazines, and another 16 shelf-feet for my Informants - still not enough room to shelve all my other chess books).

I have conservatively printed only 100 copies and I now regret a little not to have proceeded sooner. As things stand in three months time I have sold or given away as gifts (9) about half of them, recouping all my (money not time)investment already.
Considering that CCN is in english and will draw interest from people from all continents, printing 200, 300 or even 500 copies is really a no-brainer. If I had the rights I would do it tomorrow morning without hesitation.

I am mostly interested in seeing CCN in book form for the benefit of chess players and chess book lovers. At this point it would be premature to speculate whether or not the CFC is going to sell its rights.

I think there is a broader market for Jeff's great work. His mate in one problems would be great for the kids' magazine "Owl" or in the free daily games paper "metroplay" put out by Metro (metroplay.ca). Puzzles distributed by King Features Syndicate, Inc., so maybe they should be the people contacted. Or try community newspapers. The master-level problems in the Star are discouraging for casual players. Solving Jeff's mate-in-ones will make them feel smarter.
