  • Mate in 8 Moves...

I do like miniatures and super miniatures that I can solve without setting up a board.

It appears moving the rook right one square Re1 sets things up nicely:
    a) Kd8 Kd6 Kc8 Rb1
    a1) Kbx Rxb2+ quickly winning
    b1) Kd8 Rxb2 Ke8 Rf2 Kd8 Rf8+

    b) Kb8 Rb1
    b1) Kax Rxb2
    b2) Kc8 Rxb2 Kd8 Re2

Do you win OR mate in exactly 8 moves?

A problem should have only a single line to achieve the goal, other White moves along the way should take longer to effect the Mate. In this diagram, other Black moves along the way allow White to Mate earlier.

A look at the TableBases at http://k4it.de/index.php?topic=egtb&lang=en would show this.

This problem was composed by Dr. Werner Speckmann of Germany and took a 3rd Prize in an Informal Tourney in 1976-1977.
