Otherwise it is a talk show.
The Quebec Junior was a big success in the past years. The 1500$ first prize probably explains the participation of nearly all the strong juniors (including GM Kovalyov). If the organizers of the Canadian junior would be able to find such sponsors (which is very hard, we must admit it), the rest wouldn't be a problem... Otherwise, many players will pay more in travel fees than what they can actually win.

In my opinion, the CMA National Challenge is a good exemple of a successful national championship, except that the canadian winner don't have the opportunity of representing Canada at another tournament. Organizing such a championship with slow games would surely cost a lot more though.

National championships used to be closed held with the same kind of money (and probably less) that is now available. They did not always attract all the best players but they certainly were much stronger and more representative than the current open championships. The invitational format was abandonned not because money was lacking, but mostly for policy and political reasons. If we keep saying that money is the main problem when it is not, no progress can be made. With the open formulas (sort of) financing itself at the players expenses, no real effort is deemed needed to even look for outside money.
