General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
It would seem even more voters were not willing to take the risk.
The last time there was a conservative government in Ontario the cost of a room for evening activities like chess or other activities was prohibitive or non existent.
I figure when Hudak was confirmed as leader McGuinty likely jumped in the air and clicked his heels. In about 4 years, and I do think the minority government will go that long, the economy will have picked up and McGuinty will look like a genius. He has the government in a recovering economy.
Voting Tory will do nothing to further the goals of the Occupy Movement.
Hi Ken
I believe I implied their efforts would be better directed at changing Dalton's policies. Failing that, a PC government might still do a better job with the economy. A significantly improved economy would make even the current Occupy Movement's objectives (whatever they are) rather moot.
The report from Mr. Drummond (a banker :D) came out today. It had well over 300 recommendations to reduce the deficit, I've heard. Let's see how many Dalton actually implements. I understand he's already ruled out at least one, namely eliminating all-day kindergarten.

McGuinty and his government have been relatively good on chess issues. If they would abandon that idiotic Green Energy Plan (the economy will dictate that it must end) and suppressed some of their nanny state tendencies, and stopped eroding personal freedoms and stopped making secret deals with civil servants, I might even grow to like them.
Kevin, You keep forgetting the party closest to the Occupy Movement's goals.
Ken, you perhaps keep forgetting what Bob Rae and the NDP's legacy were when they were in power in Ontario. The unions were not too pleased with Mr. Rae. I'll give you the provincial economy didn't tank quite as badly as under McGuinty's Liberals, but it sure did tank. Bob Rae was *legendary useless* for the province.

Usually when times get bad and there is a mess the government changes and the next party has to clean up the mess. In this case McGuinty will have to clean up after the last 8 years.
So far we've seen a stop put to electric generating station in Mississauga. I know it was a campaign promise to stop it but they way it was done suggests a combination of a money problem and a lack of necessity for the electricity. It's like a third world country which runs out of money and stops building.
I think he knows he has to get costs under control. Even the Toronto Star is getting down on the spending. They have been running a series of articles on Ornge as an example. I have some shares in Torstar so read their paper. It's a good investment because so many chess players read this left wing stuff.
I don't know how much more they can screw health care. Or tighten the screws, if you like that term better. Those who use the mental health services, which doesn't include me although there are probably those who would argue it should, will likely have noticed a deterioration in the past few years.
Cancer care depends and I suppose the outcome is what's important. In my case, what I got was dictated by what the province covered. On the one hand what he later said I would get next time wasn't covered last time, it's unknown if it would have worked as well as what I got. Still, I was left to pay 26 thousand in drug bills (2 thousand every 3 weeks). A private drug plan paid part of that but not all. I don't know how much more they can cut and still have universal health care.
I remember before government health care I had private health coverage. They came with the public system and promised they would always be there for us and look after our health. The private companies closed down. Remember it was a conservative government which was in power in Ontario at the time. They banned extra billing by doctors.
Saying right wing good, left wing bad is simplistic. It depends because demands of the times and opportunism gets in the way.
A (federal) party that would've addressed an Occupy issue (globalization) was CAP (Canada Action Party), which was formed by disaffected Liberal and NDPers who were, perhaps above all, anti-globalization (I once posted their platform on chesstalk). Now it's too late to do much about globalization, at least not at a relatively inexpensive cost to the world economy.

Here's the latest incarnation of the Canada Action Party website's policy statements:
If I understand some of the issues (objectives?) of the Occupy Movement properly, not all of CAP's policies would suit them.
I'm not interested in the fringe partys. One thing I've noticed about demonstrations. You can tell when there's going to be violence. The signs and slogans are nailed to two by fours.
Bob Rae's plan to spread the pain was a stroke of genius - the unions were too self-interested to cooperate. He took over an Ontario in the worst recession since the Depression. And yes, he was a pragmatic NDP'er, not an ideologue. It's why he is proving an excellent interim Liberal leader. They could do worse than let him have a try at their leadership federally.
