General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.

I know you don't believe in polls, Gary, but they do often have currency. I knew you'd want to know about this one - will stir your commitment to get that $ 20 saved up in advance!!

Hi Gary:
Is it going to be a Liberal & NDP race for a minority government? Prime Minister Mulcair? Has a nice ring to it.
Re: Conservatives in Third: Canada - Next Federal Gov't?
Hi Bob,
Stopping home delivery of mail to those who receive it could very well cost the Conservatives the government. Too bad.
There will be a lot of new ridings in the next election. In this riding the incumbent lives in the riding. The riding will be split next election. I've read the incumbent wants to contest this part of the riding where there was a stronger Con vote last election. Problem is, I don't think he lives in the part he wants to represent. This area had a liberal for a long time before the Conservative won so it's not a safe Conservative riding.
I can't picture the NDP winning the next federal election. Their power base of Quebec is getting very few of the new ridings.
In any case, the election is far out from now and polls have a way of changing close to the election.

I'm not connected to the political world at all, so you could be totally right in this regards. However, from my perspective mail delivery is a complete and total non-issue and aside from the initial dust-up over it, I've heard pretty much nothing about it from anyone. Is it something that is big with certain demographics? To think that something like that could push an election one way or another is odd to me since in my world of email and texting, mail service is sort of secondary. However, it sounds like it's much more important to other groups of people from what you are saying.

I'd imagine it would be a consideration for older people who don't get around much, or very well, anymore. That would be ridings with older homes.
Another consideration would be the possibility of getting a community box for 50 homes in front of your home and the traffic and mess that goes with it. I don't know if you'd buy a home with something like that out front but I know I wouldn't buy that house or the one on either side of it. You'd have cars pulling up all day and night and have to put up with the noise.
Trudeau could win himself a lot of votes by promising to reverse that decision.

I guess so. The world of politics is a strange beast for sure.

The Conservatives are likely in trouble. It is a race to replace them between the Opposition NDP, and the third party Liberals.
Re: Are NDP or Liberals Replacing Con's?: Canada - Next Federal Gov't?
Hi Bob,
After last nights buy elections the picture of the Queen on my $20. bill is laughing.
I guess you're holding it's twin for me.
I've been watching the Toronto Mayoral race. One of the candidates wants to make 200 kms of bike lanes. That's approximately from Toronto to London, Ontario. Whatever Toronto taxpayers can afford is OK with me.

It's a long way to the 2015 election. Justin has a bit of a problem sometimes with foot-in-mouth disease. Also not clear about the depth of his policies: "Join me in change." Anything can happen....and Thomas Mulcair, Opposition Leader, continues to perform well....voters are now getting used to seeing a good NDP politician, who is holding the Con's feet to the fire. It may eventually garner some good return.

I'm not reading too much into the by-elections. I think the turnout was around 30% in the Toronto ridings and a mere 15% in Alberta. A general election will have a much larger percent of the population participating.
I don't know who will win the next election. While I'd like to see the conservatives repeat, I'll have to see if any of the leaders promise to continue home delivery of mail.
One thing for sure. Minority government isn't on the ballot.
More treatment centres would be one thing to help deal with the drug abuse problem. Somewhat similar to the idea behind John School. Could do the same for out-of-control alcohol abuse, say when DUI occurs. The answer is surely not to forever look the other way regarding such 'sins'. As an average citizen, I don't look forward to encountering more often on the street used syringes, used crackpipes or even used condoms, as has already happened a lot in my own city of Ottawa. I don't even really want to chance innocently inhaling the fumes of yet more people's joints, if marijuana is legalized. Is it not complex enough socially that one means of getting artificially 'happy' (alcohol) is legal?
Regarding Mulroney, he may indeed be the worst case of probable corruption historically. The Liberals have been in power a lot more often since Confederation, however, and their known/probable level of corruption historically might be compared somehow with the PCs/Cons' average level historically. It would make for an interesting task for a historian.
Regarding why I would even consider voting NDP, I believe I gave my rationale. Not saying I've finally decided yet whether it's 'sound' IMO. If I'm stuck with the same choices as I was last time in my riding, like I wrote it's going to be a dilemma for me. One thing is clear to me, that I won't vote Liberal. Trudeau is being managed by the same sort of person who influenced the Ontario Liberal's Green Energy policy. Plus there has not been much of a housecleaning of the party since the Sponsorship Scandal (let alone what has happened with their own Senators, corruption-wise).
Trudeau's stances on terrorism, (admiration for) China's government and on other issues are becoming scary enough for me that I'm beginning to have second thoughts about not voting for the Cons. It seems Trudeau simply has to be stopped. Also, every other party than the Cons seems to adore Green Energy policies. The NDP doesn't seem clean as far as corruption and past election campaign tricks go, either. It looks like it's 'hold my nose' time.
