  • Nigel Short in Ottawa +19 =1

In a four-hour simulataneous performance against 20 of Ottawa's most dedicated chessplayers, SuperGM Nigel Short scored 19 wins and surrendered only one draw. The RA Club's honour was only saved by bringing in reinforcements in the person of the redoubtable Herb Langer, reputed to be one of the strongest players from nearby Arnprior who managed to bore the champion to the point of near-exhaustion.:) A happy Herb commented that this was probably his most exciting chess exploit since he drew with former World Champion Boris Spassky in a similar event. For his achievement, Herb was presented with a suitably inscribed copy of "Nigel Short: Chess Prodigy". Meanwhile, young Simon Kuttner was presented with an inscribed copy of "Nigel Short's Greatest Games" for the best game played by a junior. Fittingly, his father Amos also made his mark with the first game to finish.:)
In all, it was a memorable evening. On Saturday, Nigel will be participating in an Olympic Waive Active Tournament with half the proceeds going to the Canadian Olympic Team and the balance to the winner.

I was pleased to see 6 year old Victoria Chess Club member Rowan James take on Short at the simul in Ottawa.

That wasn't the Ottawa simul. Toronto maybe?
