That means we have passed Labour Day's 156 players.

Note that today is the last day to drop me an e-mail for it to count as early entry. After today there is a $20 late fee penalty.

I will update the list by sections late tonight or tomorrow morning.
    Remember to:

    - Bring Sets & Clocks
    - Come to GM Sambuev's Lecture at 3:30pm
    - Arrive before 5:30pm if you're playing in the tournament

    Hi Alex,
I noticed the list is updated, will the paring be based on CFC rating or combination with FIDE rating in U1600? there was FIDE rating listed before and sorted by FIDE if there is rating for the player.

      Hi George,

CFC Ratings will be used for seeding purposes, with the exception of two players who have a FIDE Rating, but do not have a CFC Rating. The top 2 Sections, Open & U2200, are FIDE-rated and CFC Rated. The U1900 and U1600 Sections are only CFC Rated.

Generally, if an alternative rating exists in the absence of a CFC Rating, we'll use it for pairing purposes. All FIDE ratings were listed for reference in case they changed for January 2013. In case someone's FIDE Rating would place a particular player in a higher section, that would be taken into account. Since the U1900 & U1600 Sections are not FIDE-rated, and players are still in the correct section according to all their ratings, FIDE ratings could be erased from the list.

Do your arbiters work to get FIDE licenses?

          Hi Egis,

I am not sure what you mean by our arbiters working to get FIDE licenses.
Now it is required by FIDE & CFC to have a title to run FIDE rated tournaments, be it recognized by FIDE or CFC.

Bryan Lamb is FA. I have submitted the requirements to become a National Arbiter with CFC allowing me to be arbiter for FIDE rated events, so that is underway. Geordie Derraugh and Stuart Brammall, who have been arbiters at Hart House tournaments, can certainly use their experience to get equivalence as well. So far these tournaments at Hart House have proven to be a great opportunity for the 3 of us, with a great deal of help from Bryan Lamb, to be able to work as arbiters if needed. If others are interested, they are welcome to approach us in person and we will gladly go over with them what we know and have come across.

It is another money grab by FIDE http://arbiters.fide.com
The main change because of the new regulations will be that from 01.01.2013, in order a tournament to be rated, all its Arbiters (IA, FA, National Arbiters) must be licensed.

There is a list of licensed arbiters though non from HH :/

Good point. I see that. I find it a bit strange that Bryan is not on that list. He has been active enough and I know has written the test and completed all the norms, perhaps he has missed a form of some sort. In any case, the tournament has been registered with FIDE without an issue and I feel confident this is to be rated as all previous events. It would be a shame, after all, to be unable to rate tournaments in the future with FIDE due to such technicalities (for me, I am missing photo apparently?), especially since the paperwork has been submitted. I am thinking that we're all still playing catch-up with the FIDE-imposed-changes and status upgrades. But that is a different topic altogether.

And we the Canadian sheep will keep sending money to FIDE. All because of our chess players' fanatical lust for FIDE ratings. The alternative? Withdrw from FIDE?
How about if we invite FIDE President Illusionov to come to Canada to explain where all these monies are going. We would of course ask him to pay a modest appearance fee - say $20,000 - for coming to visit! :)

Reminder -- Bring Sets & Clocks!

                  Hi all,

Just a reminder: Bring your sets and clocks!

You're a chess player. If you don't own a set and clock, you probably should (invest in one).
Hart House tournaments are not like the Canadian Open. Our club can't justify owning 90 clocks and sets, and we want to keep our entry fees reasonable. We like to believe, among other things, this is why we can compete with tournaments like some Canadian Opens when it comes to participation.

Just a reminder: Bring your sets and clocks!

                  Thank you,

                  Alex Ferreira

During the Hart House Winter Open, the GTCL will award recent Toronto Women, Senior, and Junior champions. The ceremony is planned before the start of Round 3 on Saturday. Bring your loud round of applause :)

The pairing draw for the GTCL team competition will take place some when between 2 and 3 rounds. There are 8 teams at this moment.

Good luck to players! Prepare your smiles on Saturday :)

Round 3 probably is close to finish, but I needed to leave early.

                            Pairing R3

Standing after R2 (top players; don't look at the Prize section)

I dropped by after work and saw some endgame struggles. This one between two young players on board 70 was interesting. Black to move:
