Thanks a lot! I was trying to find the website this week. I'm glad to see that the dates for the CYCC are July 10-13, but it is a little bit odd to have only the tie-breaks on the last day...
How many people are allowed per room at the 95$ fee?

$225 for 6 games? It should be a 7 rounds event.

I phoned the hotel. It is $95/night for a room with a Queen-sized bed; they can add a cot too.

Canadian Open entry fees are definitely outpacing inflation!

Entry fees over the years (earliest - on-site, and prize fund). Some info for recent years is unavailable due to no longer-existent Web pages.

          2013 (Ottawa): $200-$275. $25k.
          2012 (Victoria): $175-$215. $15k.
          2011 (Toronto): $175+. $30k (based on 300 entries).
          2010 (Toronto): $175-$195. $30k.
          2008 (Montreal): $50-$120. $25k.
          2007 (Ottawa): $125-$175. $20k (based on 200 entries).
          2005 (Edmonton): $100+. $20k (based on 200 entries).
          2004 (Kapuskasing): $95-$140. $20k + 80% of entry fees.
          2003 (Kapuskasing): $95-$140. $20k + 90% of entry fees.
          2002 (Montreal): $60-$90. $12k (based on 250 entries).
2001 (Sackville NB): $99-$139. $10k minimum or 90% of entry fees.
          2000 (Edmonton): $125. $20k based on 200 entries.
          ......
          1990 (Edmunston NB): $55-$75. $10k. (less than 60 players - prizes for almost everyone! I won $400).
          ......
          1980 (Ottawa): $40-$50. $4k.
          ......
          1974 (Montreal): $12-$15. $7.5k.

Ramadan starts on July 9th, and CYCC on July 10th. I wonder if Muslim participants will count as "travellers" and therefore not required to fast during daylight hours.

You can add Ottawa 1962: entry fee $10 ($5 for students) with prize fund <$1,000. I recall because I paid my entry fee then advised the organizer, Ron Rodgers, that I would be unable to attend. Not only did I not get my money back but he listed me as among those who withdrew without notice because of poor results!! He published an excellent tournament book three years later for the price of $2.00.
Times have changed and not for the better.
BTW, Lazlo Witt won the event with a stunning 9/9 points ahead of Geza Fuster (of Portoroz fame) and Theodorvitch-Suk on 7 points.

Re: 2013 CYCC and Canadian Open: Official Website

In 1962 the average wage was around $4,000.00 per year or around $75.00 per week. In 2011 the average wage was around $46,000.00 per year or around $880.00 per week.

Of course there are now other factors to take into consideration like CPP deductions. That didn't start until around 1966.

In 1962, as I recall, it was only the 4rd Canadian Open and a field of under 50 players. The Open was held every second year. The Canadian Junior champion being the junior who finished with the best score in that Canadian Open. I considered playing in that Canadian Open but traveling from Manitoba was expensive. I was qualified as the provincial junior representative. Two others did play, as I recall, and one of them won the Canadian junior that year.

CYCC is the biggest and most important youth chess event of the year. I think 6 rounds is too short. Why leave last day only for tie break and side event? Most of players may already have left when regular games finish.

                    Canadian Open start on July 13 (Rd.1 - Saturday, July 13; 4:30 p.m.)
Canadian Youth July 13: Tiebreaks, and fun event TBD (blitz, simul): 10 am

Reminds me a similar situation in 2011, when CCYC players went directly to CO.

In 2010, the CYCC (Windsor) finished on Friday, and the CO (Toronto) started on Saturday. I wonder if you are thinking of 2011.

agreed, with 6 rounds, it will be inaccurate to determine top 3 in most open sections, but probably good enough to determine 1st place unless there are more than 64 players in that section.

just wondering why CFC doesn't have relatively fixed CYCC rules, the organizers can change so many things like number of rounds, entry fees, playoff or not, prize etc.

personal opinion, 2011 seems to be the best among the CYCCs in recent years.

Organizers, when they presented an unfinished bid, were advised that 3 days (6 rounds) were not enough for the CYCC.
