Re: 2013 CYCC and Canadian Open: Official Website

    1. Cut CYCC to 6 rounds doesn't look like a smart idea. 7-th round is much more important than play-off (WYCC doesn't have play-off at all, uses computer tie-break instead).

    2. Organizers want to increase entry fee per game by 50%.

    175/7=25 CAD.
    225/6=37.5 CAD.

    3. How section with 7 or 8 players will be played? 6 rounds Swiss?

    4. Looks like for organizers CO is the main project, CYCC is just a small addition. I think, it should be opposite. CYCC, Canadian Closed, Canadian Junior all are National championships; CO is just a nice tournament.

Well said Victor ! I hope the organizer will re-consider the number of rounds

        You're right, Robert!

FIDE is trying to establish a fixed place in the calendar for every event:
        NAYCC - in May,
        PanAm YCC - in July,
        WYCC - in August-September.

If we really want to avoid scheduling issues, we should move CYCC to March-April - like many other Federations in the world.

        What do you think:
Would it be convenient to hold CYCC during Easter weekend?

That seems like a good idea. It will avoid conflict with other major tournaments and it will allow for a 7-rounder since there is no interference with CO. People will be able to book their trips to WYCC earlier, so they can get cheaper prices for airfare. Hopefully, they will reconsider the scheduling of the tournament; 6 rounds is a disappointment.

The idea of having it over the Easter Weekend, with 7 rounds sounds good. Is it still possible for the organizers to change the date. This could help parents better plan their days off work, if the tournaments are spread out such as CYCC, NAYCC, PAM and WYCC along with WO, CO & QO

What could be the obstacle in doing this? Has any written or monetary commitment been made to the hotel?

American airlines also gives a price of $1750 with only one stop Emirates gives a price of $2,300 non stop from toronto but this may include a visa to the UAR. You can also fly to AL-Ain from Quatar but the fare from Toronto using this route would be about $2,000.

There is no doubt that airline tickets will be much more expensive if booked 3 weeks in advance. The ideal time to book International Tickets for best rates is 6-10 weeks in advance. The price quoted above $1351, would probably change to $1751 if we book in July.

Great news! He played last year in the Quebec Open and was quite impressive. It seems this year he will be playing in both the Quebec Open and the Canadien Open. Strong GMs seem to love the fact that both tournament are one after the other and within 90 minutes by bus. Let's hope it'll also be the case of the numerous amateurs in the area ;)
Hansen and Sambuev should also be playing in the Quebec Open, but I haven't heard about Nigel Short... I believe he didn't enjoy his last stay in Quebec, unfortunately.

Canada has several other GM's. Have they all been approached before foreign GM's are sought?

Canada has only three active GMs at the moment. Sambuev and Hansen are playing in the Canadian Open. Kovalyov is higher rated and thus will likely ask for more money. Last time we heard about him, he had little time to spend playing chess, so convincing him to go to Ottawa for a week must not be easy.
Unfortunately, the other Canadian GMs don't want to play anymore...

Kevin Spraggett is active in Europe. Pascal Charbonneau (who was (is?) in Montreal over the holidays) plays in some New York events. Was Thomas Roussel-Roozmon approached?

Then there are some strong Canadian IM's (Hébert, Hergott, O'Donnell, Hartman, Noritsyn, etc.) - some of whom live in the Ottawa area.

                            Prize Fund (expected)*: $25,000
                            Section Prizes: U2400, U2200, U2000, U1800, U1600, Unrated
Special Prizes: Top female, Veteran (60+), Junior (U18), Biggest Upset

*based on 200 CYCC entries and 200 CO entries.

Does this mean that the money from the CYCC will be used to finance the Canadian Open?

                              AFAIK, the CYCC entries finance:
                              • the CYCC tournament;
                              • the travel stipend/expenses to the WYCC for CYCC winners;
                              • part of the CO.

I don't know what the proportion of each is.

GM Eugene Perelshteyn will be competing in the 2013 Canadian Open Chess Championship in Ottawa.

The 2013 Canadian Open will be his third Canadian Open in a row, and fourth in five years:
2012 Canadian Open (½ point out of 1st)
2011 Canadian Open (½ point out of 1st)
2009 Canadian Open (½ point out of 1st)

No points for detecting a pattern. ;)
