    Re : Reykjavik Open

I find this chess news item, at least the title, a little odd. Precisely how does a 2684 GM "stun" a 2462 IM?

The Republic of New Iceland (Gimli, Manitoba) had an RCAF base. I think it was part of the Pinetree Line. The DEW line was the early warning and the Pinetree the secondary warning.

I don't know about taking Manhattan but understand some of the Air Force guys took wives. :) Or so they say...

That part of our history makes for interesting reading.

On the note of conspiracies, the year was 1984. I hitched a ride with team Canada to Greece for the Olympiad. Iceland had a formidable men's team. The women's team was quite revealing - if married, the last name was ...son. If not, the last name was ...dottir.

Are you implying that Hans Jung might be the true parent of Eric Hansen?

Wei Yi is also an IM and one norm shy of GM status. The 13-year-old (!!) got nicked for a draw today against the 3-time Chinese Champion, Ling Diren (2709) and now sits at 3.5/4. He'll be in tough again tomorrow, wielding the Black pieces against Wesley So (2684) on board #5.

                    Re: Reykjavik Open

They landed a big passenger plane at the old Gimili airport around 1983. The airliner ran out of gas and became a glider. The pilot put it down in Gimili. The airport was being used for auto racing or something like that so it was a challenge.

A couple of years ago there were some articles in the newspaper about Iceland using the Canadian dollar as their currency. I don't know how serious they ever got about that. The population of Iceland isn't very large so it probably wouldn't have been a strain.
