General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
In the interim, I have agreed to act as the Interim President, pending the election of a new Executive at the AGM of the CFC likely to be held in 3 or 4 months in June or July this year.
I want to thank Michael for his excellent 20 months of service as our President and wish him all the best in his future endeavours!
Further, as a result of Michael's resignation, our Executive have lost 2 of our 7 members as this has resulted in Bob Gillanders departure as Past President. I will not be seeking re-election at the AGM this year and I do not expect to see the return of any more than 3 or 4 of us for next year.
Time for those considering serving the CFC to think about this and begin preparation for a presidential campaign or another position on the Executive.
Please stay tuned as the CFC will be issuing 3 important RFPs this week.
Thanks for your patience and understanding during this time of transition at the CFC. :)
From his message on the Chess Canada board, I get the feeling that Mr. von Keitz resigned as he feels he has somehow failed as President.
I'm not much into politics, not even chess politics, so I'm not familiar with what's going on. Mr. von Keitz did not explain anything in his message, so I don't understand why he has stepped down.
If anyone could provide some explanation, detailed or brief, I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,
Jordan
No matter how big and bad you are, when a two-year-old hands you a toy phone, you answer it.
I don't think Michael resigned because of any feeling that he didn't do an excellent job. Quite the opposite - he was a pillar of strength to those of us in supporting roles and I am most grateful for his strong leadership over the past 2 years.
My apologies I misread the first lines of Mark's post. Specifically I thought this line was part of Michael's resignation letter and that the I referred to Michael not Mark:

I now understand that I means Mark Dutton and the line as written was not part of Michael resignation letter or details.

I have to echo Paul's comments. Michael has been an excellent CFC President, and I hope he knows that is how most of us who have worked with him feel.
He did not seek a high profile with the members/ public, but was a very good in-house leader of the governors and executive, and quite a workhorse behind the scenes.
I also wish him well in whatever he has now decided to focus his sights on.

Have you ever considered resigning? Just asking...
Michael sent the Governors a different text than the one posted on the CFC discussion board.
I have no idea what text he wrote to the governors. However, I've wondered how a person can hope to successfully head a national organization with limited funds, a large unwieldy board of governors, online meetings where no face to face discussions take place and what appears to be lack of interest from the general membership.
My observation is that Michael had outside pressures that prevented him from keeping his role for the rest of the term. I am sure he is proud of the work he has accomplished, while President.
Vice-President Mark Dutton is assuming the role of President until the AGM. At that time he will become Past President on the 2013-2014 Executive.
For the rest of the 2012-2013 term the position of Vice President and Past President will be vacant.

I agree. Michael was on top of things, worked hard behind the scenes and did a lot of good work...and the CFC as well as chess in Canada...is lucky to have had his services. He is a bright young individual who no doubt will shine in whatever field he chooses to focus his time and energy!
Michael, Good luck and thank you for your contribution!
I think Michael did as good a job as anyone could, but the
failure to inspire the general chess populace led to his
decision.
Except for a few bright spots - youth chess, the strong Western
and Quebec organizations, and clubs like the Annex - the Canadian
chess scene today remains exceedingly bleak, well beyond the
remedy of any one person.
Decades ago, organized corruption tried to get felons like
Saul Betesh into running tournaments, with little success.
NOWADAYS, tournament directors openly abet cheating players.
The Ontario and federal executives have been caught redhanded
in fraud and theft. A mafia mouthpiece stimies general enquiry and
decisions by the governors, making endless lunatic motions,
and rewriting the history of scams. And accountability is
noticeably absent everywhere.
To this we must add the berating and slandering of critics on
web forums like this one, and the suspicious poisioning incidents
involving master level "whiners" like Nickoloff, Schleiffer and
Spraggett. Is it any wonder that the average player here seems so
disenchanted?
Good luck to Michael on his next major endeavour, and we hope he can
stick around to help in other ways.

Your feeling is a bit off. I would say that he has accomplished pretty much everything that he has set out to do and now it is time for some new challenges.
What's the status with the other positions where there are RFP's? Are the incumbents also leaving their positions?
May 1 2013 is the expiry date of the current Administrative contract (ie Executive Director).
The Book & Equipment contract expired several months ago, and we have been going month to month.
The CCN Editor contract expired a couple of months ago, and we have been going month to month.
These are all business contracts and the CFC Executive has decided to issue and RFP for each, although all incumbants have been invited to submit an RFP.

Hi Fred,
First I would like to say that Gerry has been great for the CFC. As for the other two contracts that the CFC has...I think the CFC can do better.
I am aware of the conditions of the present contracts. Should everyone not know what they are bidding against?
