Re: Aronian - Carlsen - who's going to win?

Rd 6 Radjabov - Aronian - what a battle! Radjabov started making moves after the time control that were the chess equivalent of a punch drunk boxer. Finally he blundered. Aronian - what a fighter! After that tense win he's tied with Magnus for the lead a point and a half ahead of the rest of the field! Not even half way yet!

It would seem that Carlsen has the advantage of an extra White (5 vs 4) in the remaining 8 rounds, but then again, both Aronian and Carlsen have 2/3 of their wins with Black. If there's no winner in their key R8 game, then we may well have the photo finish that Dr. Nunn predicts.

Kramnik seems to think he's been deficient in the "luck" component of the game. From the horse's mouth:

"I just have bad luck. I quite like my play but the ball is just not getting into the goal. Yesterday I was very close to a win, and today again... It was just amazing that I was not checkmating him. I’m afraid that if I don’t repeat moves I’m just lost. It would be a gamble because he is a very good blitz player. I am not happy about the way the tournament is going but I don’t think I can blame myself. The only thing I can do is continue to show good chess and hope that at some point I will have luck on my side."

Lol, Aronian also puts some stock in the "luck" factor.

"I should say that till the very last moment he [Radjabov] was defending very well. Only through luck I managed to break his resistance."

Aman - another goal to get stronger - if you get strong enough you get invited to the tournaments where you can do analysis with her.:)

There is a wealth of interesting interviews and commentary - so much so its hard to select at times - Nigel Short is an all time favorite (as commentator) and Aman is doing an excellent job. There are several others.
I really like Aronian - for a deep thinker he's quite the modest and likeable guy. Thanks for your interesting quotes and observations Jack.

Re: Aronian - Carlsen - who's going to win?

The question is still valid at the half time. Both Carlsen and Aronian showed great form and exceptional fighting spirit winning tight games or saving inferior positions. Chucky played for the public again, and after a shaky start his play level increased. Kramnik is like Roger Federer - a legend and still a great player but not at his peak - he missed a "must win" position against Aronian, and that was not just because of "bad luck".
Radjabov, Svidler, Grishciuk, and Gelfand played OK but not memorable so far.
At this point seems very unlikely that any player other than Aronian or Carlsen will win.

Seven games remain. Some of the players have little to lose by going for it. I expect some exciting chess in the last half of this event.

There's a propitious comment by Dennis Monokroussos at his popular chess blog, 'The Chess Mind', re 'our' Aman Hambleton:

I was following on Chessdom, where Canadian IM Aman Hambleton supplied comments on Carlsen-Radjabov in excellent prose that explained strategy and variations at perfect picth for the audience.

Sorry, I was away all weekend playing at a chess tournament. (Good excuse?)
Anyways rd 7 all were draws. The most interesting game was Carlsen Radjabov. A save by Carlsen. But more so I got the feeling that Radjabov just couldnt find the moves to put him away. Have a look at the game yourself. Ive played that opening for white with success but brilliant strategy by Radjabov as black in the early middlegame. After seven rounds (mid way in the tournament) Carlsen and Aronian lead + 3, more importantly 3 wins ahead of the rest of the pack.

Rd8 the key game was Carlsen Aronian = draw. Both sides were careful. Also important was Kramnik's first win - finally! Is it too late? Maybe. He needs to win another in the next two rounds and hope Magnus and Levon continue to draw. That would leave him with an outside chance at a shot for first in the nervous last few rounds. Kramnik right now is two wins back of the leaders but he plays Magnus next. In other games Chucky lost on time and Gelfand won against Radjabov form a very strong opening idea. Radjabov is now out of the race and he and Chucky occupy the last two places in the candidates tournament.

I have to say I really enjoyed Kramnik's play in the endgame against Svidler in rd 8. Very nice finish!

Rd 9 Svidler and Grischuk have blown up the position! and they lit up the arena! Svidler "sacks" the queen for two knights and a bishop but the tactical melee is just beginning! Tactical craziness at its best. The computer likes Grischuk at + 2 but who really knows. Kudos to Svidler for initiating the slugfest and providing the fans first class entertainment (maybe more than they can handle or understand?)

There's even humor in the Svidler-Grischuk craziness. In the midst of the tactical smorgasbord Grischuk plays the supreme tickler ...h3! to wreck Svidler's remaining kingside pawn structure. (almost like a fly buzzing around the mess!)
