At least Gelfand is looking good as a prognosticator (:

From ChessBase: “he (Aronian) is the most striking player around, with the highest creative level, in terms both of openings and original ideas in the middlegame. Number one at the moment. So, frankly, it surprises me that the entire press is part of the Carlsen fan club, and not Aronian's.”

Today Rd 3. Im really enjoying Magnus's endgame play. To me thats exciting! Magnus evaluation is much better than the computers. He headed for position with passed A+B pawn. Computer showed 0 evaluation for long time than finally agreed with Magnus, now swinging upwards to +1 for Black!

Aronian spoiled his position in Chucky's timetrouble, but who would have believed Chucky would play better than Houdini (the escape artist not the computer) in time trouble!? Aronian comes up with the desperate and brilliant Rb6 and then Chucky finally blunders. Snap. Aronian is now in the drivers seat. Is it too early for Armenia to celebrate?

Kramnik had the position he wanted (after 23.Nc5) but let it get away or was it because of Grischuk's resourceful play?

Radjabov looked like he didnt like his position early and tried to bail out with captures on c3. Svidler got the N+B for a rook and is now making Radjabov suffer in the endgame.

Ivanchuk lost on time... In a very interesting position. With accurate play, Black might even have an edge.

Yes I enjoyed the Magnus finish in particular and less so the Svidler "lesson".
                  Amazing chess!

Chucky lost on time but he was in big trouble in the final position.

Well deserved win by Magnus, especially when it comes against a player like Gelfand. Ivanchuk seems that he plays "over the board", gets into time trouble and loses badly. Why Radjabov chose to give K+B for a Rook in that position, against a player like Svidler, is hard to understand. Maybe somebody can explain...

Is it just my impression or is Carlsen's real strength his endgame play?

                          My thoughts as well.

It's interesting to see a top player who does not rely so much on opening preparation and can outplay his opponents in a variety of situations, including the endgame.

In that endgame an interesting situation occurred. At the level of expertise of Gelfand his exchange of queens can be labelled huge blunder. Admittedly the defence was difficult but after the exchange no chance at all. Dead lost. Psychological pressure as well!?

That's a good point. A player of Gelfand's caliber should have seen that the queen swap was hopeless. But he didn't.

I've been saying for quite some time that late middlegames/endgames seem to be a weakness (relatively speaking, of course!) among top players. But they sure can dish out 20+ moves of opening preparation.

Carlsen is feeding on this. Maybe that's why he and Kasparov didn't get along very well, after all.

RD 4 -today Chucky brought out the Chigorin's Defence!?! - at the highest level WoW WoW WoW Im enjoying that for sure and am so excited!!! Kudos to Chucky. Kramnik has a classic position against the hanging pawns. Svidler brought out some nice home prep in the QGA irregular and neutralised Aronian's intentions quite nicely = draw. Magnus sooner than later (today) issued 1.e4 proving that e4 is not just the opening of choice for weaker players (refuting GM Bauer's earlier thoughtless comment). Nice strategic games today but I also expect some fireworks.
