General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Good news. I have been able to register this event with Fide. This means that the Top Guns section will be FIDE rated. To make sure the way I run chess tournaments conforms with FIDE laws please note the following conditions will be apply to *all sections* of this event:
*The Zero Tolerance rule will NOT be in effect however games that are one hour late will receive a forfeit loss. The TDs may use their discretion whether to apply the hour to the opponents clock or the advertised start time. The losing player will take a CFC rated forfeit.
*All games will be 90 minutes with a 30 second increment
Please keep checking back to this forum post for any updates regarding FIDE regulations and this event. The organizers will post any changes to regular FIDE formats here.
Ok everyone I've now posted hotel information, a link to google maps, bus info and relevant links. I'm asking Mississauga residents to please look over what I've posted above and make any suggestions to help the chess players coming in from out of town.
Also, please let us know if there is anything closer to the campus than the hotels I've posted.
Garvin, could you confirm we will not be enforcing the FIDE zero tolerance rule? People are asking.
Our usual rule of forfeit after 1 hour (from start time of round) will be in effect?
Mark I'm going to reply to your initial question before you edited your post because I find it an interesting one.
The question is: how would the 2000 dollars be divided?
(I want to make a big caveat here: if we get a big enough turnout the prize fund will be MORE than 2000 dollars!)
First of all the ideas I am saying below are just my thoughts on how to distribute the prize fund based on my experience as an organizer. My ideas are not written in stone and I welcome any input you or anyone else has on how it should be done.
I should also mention that I will be submitting a proposal for how the prize fund should be distributed to the Mississauga Chess Club's executive and they may request changes for any number of reasons.
That said and done, here are my thoughts on how it will go:
Those of you who have attended my tournaments before maybe have noticed I usually take 60% of the prize fund for the top guns and 40% for the U2000 section and then create three prizes each along the lines of a 3:2:1 ratio. (Creating a total of six prizes).
2000 dollars divided among this formula would lead to the following: Top guns would get 1200 and U2000 would get 800. The prizes for Top Guns would be 600, 400, 200 and for U2000 it would be 400, 266, 133 respectively.
However there is a problem with this way of doing things in some cases. In the past I had an issue with a large turnout of a group that had no chance to win anything. (In this case experts).
Some of you may think, hey isnt that just what they deserve? They didn't win so don't give them anything! But the problem is that if they are the biggest group, they are also the group the tournaments (I will run) depend on in the future, so I'd like to create a category prize in the event the same thing happens. (If there is a low turnout I would just use the formula above).
So what I'm trying to say is: I want to reserve the right to create a category prize if I feel that it would somehow help the tournament as a whole.
If this were done the prize fund would be distributed something like this:
(Let's for the moment assume a category prize of 100 dollars for experts who for some reason had an abnormally high turnout.) That would leave 1900 that would be divided using the formula I mentioned above. The prizes would thus be:
(1140 for top guns)
570, 380, 190
(760 for U2000)
378, 252, 126
And a 100 dollar category prize.
So those are the two possible distributions I am thinking of. I welcome any thoughts any of you have on this. I am quite open to making a change if you can convince me it will help the event...but like I said, I need to be convinced..and so do the executives of the club that's giving us the money!
60% for Open and 40% for Under 2000 are fair enough. Good luck to you tournament!!!
Garvin, could you confirm we will not be enforcing the FIDE zero tolerance rule? People are asking.

The zero tolerance rule is NOT in effect. Players can be up to one hour late before we hand them a forfeit. The TD will have the discretion to choose if the 1 hour begins from the scheduled starting time or from when the clock is started.
Players who have not confirmed their registration (By showing up Saturday morning) will simply not be paired. (You are welcome to request a bye.)
Players who receive a forfeit for being late will receive a RATED CFC loss. If they are in the FIDE section they will be given a forfeit under the FIDE guidelines as well as a CFC rated loss.
Players who don't show up for a game will risk being removed from the rest of the tournament. (They better have a darn good reason.)
I hope this clarifies things. But ask questions either here or in an email to me if you are unclear.
Hi everyone, I want to make a comment about requests to play up a section. Or to play in higher sections unrated. I hope this also clarifies what the poster is saying.
First of all in order to play in the U2000 or Top Gun sections you need to meet the rating requirement of that respective section. You need to be 1500 to play in the U2000 and 1900 to play in the Top Guns.
Some people have a Mississauga Club rating or a rating from out of the country. Yes, I will accept these with the following conditions:
You must send me a screenshot or some kind of evidence of your out of country rating. If a conversion needs to be done to get the elo equivalent (like British Chess Federation for example) you need to send me a link to the page that shows how to do the conversion and so on.
If you don't have a CFC rating but get permission to play in the U2000 section, you will not be eligible for prizes.
Players who have no rated tournament experience will not be allowed to play in the U2000 or Top Gun section.
If anyone has any questions about this feel free to ask
