Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.

I note the Can. Open is July 11 - 19 ( Sun. ). The Quebec Open starts July 18 ( Sat. ). With 1 rd. on Sat. and 2 on Sunday in the QO, I guess foreign GM's in the CO will not be able to make it to the Quebec Open ( they would need 3 byes and to be there for 6:00 PM Monday for Rd. 4 ). It seems too bad this cannot be coordinated somehow for foreign GM's.

Hi Bob,
I am sure the organizers of both events took this into consideration but for whatever reasons...they decided to overlap.
BTW, I am not involved in the organization of either event I was just reporting :)
Last year it was only 1 organizer and one event so there was no conflict :)

I think at one time the Canadian Open was always the First weekend after Canada Day. But I do not know why they changed that unless it was when they started to include the Junior tournament the week before the Cdn Open and that may have caused some problems.
For what ever reason the CFC should make their Canadian Open so it never conflicts with the Quebec Open because the Quebec Open always go with the Just for Laughs Festival and I believe that date is set in stone.
So it is the CFC's Cdn Open Organizers fault not the Quebec Open Organizers fault. That we cannot play in both tournaments without having to take BYES.

Yeah. Considering Canada lacks norm tournaments and strong tournaments all together, It really is a pity that the two strongest opens in Canada conflict with eachother. I mean it really is avoidable unless theres some tournament or conflict that I do not know of. It's not like we have a lot of tournaments and are forced to make them collide. A lot of norm-seekers who can't afford to go out of Canada will lose another opportunity.

The starting dates of the Quebec Open have fluctuated over the years. Starting dates (1994-2008) have been (July) 23,26,27,26,25,24,22,21,13,12,17,17,8,20,19. The dates seem to be determined by the dates of the "Just for Laughs" festival (a sponsor for a few years), or the so-called "construction holiday" (usually the last 2 weeks of July).
Dates of the Canadian Open have also fluctuated over the last 12 years or so. Starting dates (1998-2008) have been (July) 11,2,8,8,13,12,10,9,15,7,19.

Maybe it has to do with the prize money. When the events overlap the same players can't win it all.

I agree. It would be good if the CFC could at least reserve dates for their national events two years in advance. I'm not sure if this is possible, but I don't think its really difficult. You have to factor the World Open into that equasion, as well as the Quebec Open, Canadian Open, CYCC, Canadian Junior. We always know when the World Open will be held, but the Canadian Open and Quebec Open have overlapped before. I would think it would be in the best interest of both of those events to coordinate.
Regarding the Canadian Junior, I feel it should always be held over the Christmas break to avoid any conflicts with CYCC. This has traditionally been when the Junior was run.
