I regrouped all the 79 Quebec Open games we have so far in one PGN files. It does not include the mini-coq nor the longer games from yesterday. We'll keep working on it.

Here it is (too heavy for chesstalk) : http://echecsmontreal.ca/coq_2013_parties.pgn

Thanks Felix. I did realize after a while that the weekday games must start at 6pm (EDT) since I found the live games had just started when I looked a few minutes after the hour.

There are several reasons to start new threads:
posts with pictures become heavy to load.
less chances that the thread will go a wrong way LOL

                Round 4

GMs Bruzon and Kovalyov seem to recover well from their first round upsets, as they both won their next three games. Razvan Preotu, who started with two wins, lost his two next games against experienced GMs. However, he still has a FIDE performance of over 2500 so far. After 4 rounds the leaders, with 3.5 points, are :
GM Sulskis (perf 2781), GM Bruzon (perf 2672), GM Chirila (perf 2677), GM Arencibia (perf 2686) and IM Leonid Gerzhoy (perf 2744). Leonid, the only IM among them, won his round 4 game against IM Hambleton.

                Interesting game :

We had a special request to show a game of GM Sulskis. Here's his first round game, in which he played a very interesting novelty in the opening (8... e5):

                Upsets:
Surprisingly, there was pretty much no major upset for this round.

                Shameless self-promotion:
If you were not able to play at the Quebec Open, it's not too late to have some fun!
We are organizing Canada's biggest blitz tournament Sunday at 7 PM. There is $1000 in guaranteed prizes and already quite a few confirmed GMs! There's only one section and the entry fee is $20 (for 6 double rounds).
Still not enough? We also organize a bughouse tournament on Saturday at 7 PM. It costs $20 per team of two players ($10 for Quebec Open players). Some very strong participants should be there.

If you are looking for big prizes. The Montreal Open will be organized at the same venue from September 6-8 2013. There is $5000 in guaranteed prizes and entry fees starting at $40. All the details should be posted on Chesstalk next week.

                    Round 5

Here are the leaders so far (no perfect score after 5 rounds):

                    Invitational:
GM Bruzon, the highest rated player of the invitational is so far leading.
1 GM Bruzon Batista Lazaro CUB 2689
Five players are tied for the second place, including IM Leonid Gerzhoy who has great chances of scoring another GM norm.

Three Montreal players are leading the Open section with 4/5. The highest rated players of the section, James Fu (2257) and Mike Ivanov (2238), both from Ontario, respectively have 3.5 and 3 points.
                    1 Galbadrakh Enkh-Amar CAN 2145 4.0
                    Luksza Arkadiusz CAN 2116 4.0
                    Cardin Guillaume CAN 2050 4.0

                    U2000:
So far, the leaders are :
                    1 Sarrazin-Gendron Roman CAN 1928 4.5
                    2 Rondon Luciano CAN 1885 4.0
And 7 players are tied for third place. Roman won in round 5 against the highest rated player of the section, Jonathan Turcotte, who now has 3.5/5.

                    U1700:
Evan Frangakis is leading this section (73 players) with 4.5/5.
                    1 Frangakis Evan CAN 1470 4.5
                    2 Plante Marc-Eric CAN 1671 4.0
                    Dubreuil Raymond CAN 1549 4.0
                    Steinberg Ellis CAN 1507 4.0

                    U1300:
This section is dominated by Simon Girard and Wenxuan Zhong (a promising young player from Team-Quebec).
                    1 Girard Simon CAN 1247 4.5
                    Zhong Wenxuan CAN 1223 4.5

                    Game of the Day :

GM Kovalyov, who lost his first round game after a "fingerfehler", now reminds us why is the highest FIDE-rated player in Canada. It's definitely a must-see if you are looking for an example of precise GM play.

Yes, but that game won't count for the purpose of getting a norm, and thus getting a GM norm will be a lot more difficult.

According to the rules, if they are still the same as when I last read them, you can get a norm with only 8 rounds if you would normaly have qualified for the norm should you have played (and lost) a 9th round.

I think that the rating that is used for this hypothetical opponent is the same as the average rating of your previous opponents, but don't trust me blindly for those details.

The rules are designed to take care of special situations like this and reduce the consequences of something you are not responsible for. On the other hand, it makes getting the norm harder so as to discourage anyone from trying to take advantage of this exception (which was obviously not the case here for M. Gerzhoy).

Note that you cannot decide to do tricky things like asking not to count the 1st game if counting only the last 8 games would have given you a norm.

From the new FIDE Title Regulations effective from 1 July 2013

1.41c For a 9 round tournament, if a player has just 8 games because of a forfeit or Bye, but he has met the correct mix of opponents in those games, then if he has a title result in 8 games, it counts as an 8 game norm.

Exact. It makes the norm slightly more difficult, but since IM Gerzhoy will be playing against his 4th GM, he should be all right (as long as he has a good score in the remaining three games!).
