Nice to see Jason Cao do so well after a painful loss in round one. Apparently finishing clear 3rd in a group 5 or 6 years older than himself.

None of the top 4 finishers were 5 or 6 years older than Jason. Of the three Americans, who took the top three positions, Akshat Chandra is born in 1999, Justus Williams in 1998, and Awonder in 2003 (!!). The 4th place finisher, Canada's own Razvan Preotu, is born in 1999 and, of course, Jason Cao in 2000. Youth was certainly served here in the U18 Section!

Razvan Preotu is a name I'm not overly familiar with other than seeing his results. Seems like quite a rising star to have a 2500 rating at age 14!

                            Hi Paul,

Razvan took part in the 2012-13 Canadian Junior which was organized by the CMA. He has been delivering the goods in spades of late! Always present with a smile...and always in good spirits!

His Dad, Rene, was a godsend at the Canadian Junior. He brought his own equipment to allow folks to watch the games onsight displayed on a screen. At the NAYCC this year, he was pushed aside in the directing field because of his work committments but nevertheless helped out wherever he could...including taking pictures for us. In 2010, at the NAYCC in Montreal, he was a volunteer director that made a major contribution! This is a "class" family that I totally enjoy!

Interesting note: 4 players who were invited to the CMA 2012-13 Canadian Junior took part in the U18 section at the NAYCC.

At the NAYCC I was speaking with lots of parents :). The suggestion was made to put events together for players who are striving for that master rating. I like the idea. We will see what we can do. In my opinion, it would be great if the CMA had a program at that level....that was continuous.

                              Winning is everything.

50 years from now you'll still be able to find who won the event.

I think it's better to win first place in your own age group than to finish out of the prizes in a higher group.

That is too shallow thinking.....Time passes by very fast....and if you don't achieve the highest level in your school years, it's very difficult to do it after that....Razvan is GM potential, so why should he be still playing in U-14 if there is a possibility of winning U-18

I would say achieving the highest potential is more important than winning....chess is about life....it is not about winning all the time but about achieving the best in life.....
