General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
If you check that crosstable for 1968 there is an "Armstrong" from Sarnia who scored 5.5 and ended up in 86th place...
[ I vivdly recall losing to Vranesic in Round 1 and never really recovering from that - lol - I ended up with 4.5 and 115th place ]
I was pretty disappointed with my performance in that event. It was a clear indicator I couldn't take years off from serious events and score well. So, when I realized I couldn't play anymore, I did what most others who come to that realization do. I decided to organize. :D
Anyhow, I really enjoyed the years I organized at the Scarborough Club and I hope the members also enjoyed it.
I also enjoyed the years I worked for correspondence chess, nationally and internationally. I have to tell you there were two or three players who absolutely hated me. Mostly I pretended not to notice.
There were a lot of us on chesstalk who played in that. For my part, it seems Kerry was the only one I was paired against. I probably still have the score sheet around somewhere.
(and INDEED the crosstables are still there! This is part of an archive maintained by Stephen Wright in B.C. - publisher of the BCCF bulletin...)

Hi Kerry:
Thanks. Nice to know my memory isn't always shot to h***! I see that was 11 rounds at the time! I'm pleased to have gotten 50%. Think my rating at the time was likely only in the mid-1600's? Anyone have the 1968 Oct. Canadian Chess Chat.......is there a ratings list in the back? If so, would you mind telling me if I'm close on my rating in 1968 (before or after the 1968 CO?)?
By the way.......are there rating lists somewhere in the CFC database this far back?
Bob A
P.S. I was in pretty high-flying company in the first three rounds! Had forgotten....Rd. 1 Defeated Ignas Zalys of Montreal; Rd. 2 Lost to Peter Murray of London (finished with 7 pts.); Rd. 3 Lost to Sammy Kleinplatz of Montreal (finished with 7 pts.) .......

Since this thread has had a minor hijack into Canadian Open cross-table research......can anyone tell me how I find the cross-table for the first Canadian Open I played in.....1966 Kingston?? And how I might find my 1966 CFC Rating (before and after the CO)?

The 1967 and 1968 Ratings Booklets are both there -- use the Ratings menu at the CFC site and select Players -> Historical CFC Ratings & Northern Issues. A direct link is http://chess.ca/northern

The October 1966 issue of "Canadian Chess Chat" has the "1st Revision to the 13th Rating List - October 1st, 1966". The Canadian Open is listed as one of the rated events, but Bob's name doesn't appear. Not enough rated games, maybe?
Not on the 2nd revision (Jan. 1, 1967) either. Nor on the 3rd revision (April 1, 1967), nor in the annual booklet (July 1, 1967). Not on the 1st or 3rd revisions (1968 - no 2nd revision in Chess Chat).
On the 3rd 1968-69 revision (April 1, 1969), Armstrong, R from Sarnia had a rating of 1736. 1770 on the Oct. 1, 1969 revision.
Gary is not listed on the CCCA rating list for Jan. 31, 1967 (published in the Feb. 1967 "Chess Chat). He is 1823 on the Oct. 1, 1969 revision (OTB ratings).

Surely you mean CFC rating list. Sure makes me wonder what happened to the rating points from events I won years before. Not rated, I suppose.

LOL - I might have to dig myself... wonder if you played the French?
It is actually quite possible I might have played the French! (I was fond of it then...)
From the cross table I cannot tell which colour I had for our game. I cannot recall what
colour I had against Vranesic but I seem to imagine it was white.
Definitely a CCCA list. Bohatirchuk was highest rated at 1906 (that's when postal ratings were several hundred points below OTB ratings).
In the 1965 rating booklet, Gary is rated 1623.

If I'm understanding this, you're saying I'm not listed on the CCCA rating list in 1967 which makes sense but I am listed in 1969 for CFC.
